Shop addition: New Grinder

Thursday evening I placed an order (backorder actually) for a Craftsman 6 foot work bench that will replace the Steelcase desk as my work area. To prepare for its arrival, I emptied most of the drawers of the Steelcase today and put the wood back into the display case, which was elevated a few inches to allow for the additional height of the work bench. I also hung the flourescent lamp that was under the display case a bit differently, so that it doesn't go below the baseline of the display case.

I think now I'm ready for the work bench... which isn't due to arrive for two weeks.

Don't dump the desk. They are great for doing seated work.

Meanwhile you can get rid of the display case, antlers, etc and put up some perforated board on there. Very versatile as far as hanging tools, shelves (with L hooks), etc...

Uh... no... :)

My display case may seem impractical, but I like it, and it makes good use of the vertical space. Besides, I've hated pegboard since I was a kid and my father hung it in his shop area. :p

I thought the antlers were for hanging tools? :D

The grinder is looking great! Cool to see it.

I received notice that my new work bench is available for pickup today. Weather permitting, I'll go get it this morning and try to assemble it this weekend. I spent some time this morning clearing the last of the stuff out of the desk, and moving all my tools (including the grinder) off the top. It's now ready to go... if only I had a place to send it.

Update: I just found out there's a Schnitzer Steel Recycling location 15 miles away! And they are open on MLK day! Another problem solved.

My father never had a peg board, but I too hate the stuff. They were always trying to get me to use a peg board at the bike shop, but my bench was against the wall with the main entrance on it. One day I put a couple of nails into the wall and hung the two tools I used most on them, a 15mm box end wrench, and a set of folding hex wrenches that had a loop for hanging them. I told them if the tools stayed there for 15 minutes I would set up a peg board so I didn't have to heard about needing one every day, but if they fell off they had to shut up about it. No sooner did I say that did some one come it and let the door slam, low and behold the tools bounced off the board, hit the bench and fell into the used shock oil catch tray. I never had anyone tell me I needed a tool board at work again:D.

Awesome, looking forward to seeing what you can do with a grinder like that. I need to get one of those at some point too, although I'm fairly happy with my 1x30 for now.

The bench is now home, and out of the box. Assembly will be done later today, I hope.

The new bench is now assembled. The Steelcase desk is still here, so it will be a couple of days before I can really use the new bench. Here's what it will look like when the desk is gone:

Yes they would. I have a similar one that is definitely going underneath. I seriously considered buying a second one today, but held off because the bench took up most of the available space in my truck bed.

Looks much better with the new work bench! Almost like a real work area with a real grinder.

Tryppyr,

How did the Beaumont tooling arm work? How long is the arm? I was thinking about getting some 1.5" solid bar by 24" long and drilling and taping myself.

I am building a GIB and considering if I should go ahead and order one of these or try and make my own.

By the way NICE Workbench!! I have a 8 ft version of that and it is AWESOME!!

The Beaumont tooling arm works great. It's about 20 inches long, rounded at the business end, with two tapped holes of each type. I considered doing it myself, but the thing that made me buy the pre-made arm was the concern that I wouldn't be able to drill as straight as the pre-made arm, making it all but impossible to align anything attached to it.

I was hoping to be able to get the Steelcase off to the recycling place today, but the roads got iced over last night. Snow is falling again, and we are told to expect more tomorrow and Wednesday, so the Steelcase will be around a while longer.

The good news is that hasn't stopped me from using the new bench or the new grinder. The bad news is I suck with the new grinder. It will definitely be a while before I can turn out anything more than low grade crap with the grinder.

Yesterday and today I spent some time making two additional shelves to go under my drill press station (which you may recall is located at that skinny sliver of wall between the two garage doors). The new shelves will hold my HF 1x30 and the HF 4x36, primarily because I use those almost exclusively outside to control the dust problem. This will free up space on the bench to allow room for the grinder and whatever else I'm working on at the time (these shelves being a good example of "whatever I am working on at the time".)

Minor update: Today my wife dragged me to Sears, because she wanted to buy some Lands End tops. Needless to say I ended up in the tools department. I wandered over to the workbench area to see how much the storage draw accessory costs and whether they had any in stock. Turns out it was on sale for $139.99 (down from $199.99), and they had 3 in stock. I hemmed and hawed, not really wanting to mess with it. As I was about to leave I noticed a large box in the closeout section. It said "3 Drawer Module". Hmmm... I looked it over, checked the part number and found it was an accessory for the super expensive professional bench. But I looked that over and noticed that the panels for it were identical to the panels for my work bench... hmmmm.

So I checked out the price on the closeout unit... $79 (with an additional 10% off closeout items)... HHMMMMM.

You know the rest. I brought it home. Can't install it until I get rid of the Steelcase, but it will do two things... add to the structural strength of the bench and give me some deep drawers into which I can store supplies and tools.

I'm excited!!! The Steelcase desk is finally GONE! I took advantage of the fact that my wife takes Mondays to volunteer... which means her car was gone from the garage. Which means I had space to move the desk out to my truck! I already had a recycling place pegged, so I drove the 15 miles to it, dropped off the desk, and now I am free to finish assembly of the new shelving for the work bench. I'll post pictures after that work is done... sometime later this week. It won't be pretty but it will all fit together and work well.
