Well, after lots of research, studying, debate, listening to forum members, and the selling of a large chunk of my knife collection, my new mill showed up today.
I went with the Shop Fox M1001, a smaller knee mill weighing in at about 900 lbs., nine speeds, longitudinal power feed factory installed. Had two buddies here to help me when the truck arrived. It wasn't easy getting this baby into position but it wasn't as hard as we expected:thumbup: Going through spindle bearing break in right now, so playing will have to wait, but overall I'm really pleased so far. I'm glad I sacrificed a little more to get a heavier, more powerful machine. I think this one will serve me well.

Here are a couple quick pics:

It's a good sized piece of iron!

Ummm, I think I just turned green. I am completely jealous. Nice addition, bet you cant wait to use it.

LOL, thanks Matt! The best thing? I didn't have to sell any of your knives to pay for it:D Some things are just too hard to part with!

I'm looking forward to making some chips real soon.

Nice mill Jonny. It's no round column.....but it'll do for now. :p :)

Seriously, you'll like that. You'll start finding all kinds of things to do with it that you didn't even think about when you were researching and ordering it.

I thought I'd mostly just slot guards but now I'd be lost without my mill for all kinds of things.

I square up and face mill handle materials as much as anything and it makes that a breeze.

Well done.

Holla! Awesome Jon! Congratulations - I can't imagine how much fun you are going with that thing.

You'll love that. First steps: get something to make sure the table is trued. Get as
large diameter a flat faced router bit as you can for flattening handle material (guess
what, bits designed to cut wood actually work better on wood than ones designed
to cut metal).

Fantastic! All those jigs Wheeler makes? Now you can make them too! Modify your KMG? No problem!
Can't wait to see what you make with it!

Congrats Jonny! -

I am excited to see what you do with the new addition!

best regards -

soooo, are you a tea totaler? the room that was completely devoid of any beer merch was my first clue. ;)

Cute mill, BTW.

Do you know how to use that thing? I wish I had one , I've been advised that you can take introduction to machining at your local community college etc . I can't wait to see what you make with it . Congrats

I've watched these videos - They are ISO's and you have to burn to DVD, or extract to get the video files to watch.
You can rent them from Smartflix, or sometimes your library can get them from an interlibrary loan. too

Numbers, I usually trust your links brother! I clicked on the first link and indeed there was info on milling videos, but there was also a bunch of naked wangs sliding in and out of every kind of female orifice!! I don't have anything against it, it's just that my 10 year old daughter was standing right next to me. I think I x'd out of the page fast enough. Phew!:o I'll have to check out the "milling videos" later on......

Thanks!

That's the pirate bay for ya...

Great mill jonny, make us proud and knock out even more top quality knives !!!

Get yourself some Starrett brand levels, level your machine with the best level you can afford, then you can do your setup by leveling your pieces

Sorry, but I use the addon AdBlock Plus 1.3.10 in Firefox & never see an ad.

& the levelling & tramming is covered on those videos too.
