Shop addition!! The new mill is here!

Very cool Jonny, It is bigger than I pictured... How do you get a shop boy?

Hey Jon, I didn't know you had a shirt! Geez, now I want one...

Um, oh yeah, congrats on the mill. That thing is KILLER!

very nice. Next thing we know you'll be making a bunch of identical skeletonized versions of your previous work. :)

"sure, I ground the whole blade, but then I cut out all the parts you don't need, like that whole area between the edge and the spine, wasted weight, honest." :D

Nice mill johnny!! Now youve gotta shell out more dough for vices, collets and cutters ;).
I downloaded that dvd that was posted about before. After watching it I had to buy a mill and did so about 6 months ago. Its very similar to yours but a round column. Ive tooled up recently with a tapping chuck, power feed and rotary table so I can build a new grinder thats similar to a tw-90. Ill be posting when its finished.
One tip I can give as a rough guide for cutter speeds is:
12mm cutter=500rpm
6mm cutter=1000rpm
24mm cutter=250rpm
Thats for mild steel, for aluminium double these speeds and for cast iron and bronze halve them.
That tip is from the book"milling a complete course" and it has served me well.

Ummm, I think I just turned green. I am completely jealous. Nice addition, bet you cant wait to use it.

I agree, green seems to be my new color, but I would have sold the golf clubs before the knives. It looks like it is taking up shop space for that new surface grinder you will end up buying.

boy thats one big fancy drill press
i guess i woudl want one of them if i didnt have my killer HF minimill :)

a small lathe and real mill are on my list of needs

dont forget to pick up a few dial indicators and a magnetic base to hold them. you can use it to true the table to the spindle and get it a lot closer than a level. if you need some help with anything let me know. i took machine trades in my last 2 years of school.

Thanks guys, it's a bit overwhelming to say the least. Now that it's actually sitting in the shop I've got a million ideas of what I need to do with it. I'm gonna have to force myself to go slow, read up on the handbook, and do things right. Unfortunately that won't be today. Gotta leave right now to do a fifteen hour shift:(

I appreciate all the input everyone!

i have a lot of tricks that i'm sure you will find useful. pm me when you are able to talk and i'll give you a ring.

That's going to be a lot of fun. On a more serious note, I was sorely disappointed to see a Corona sign in your shop. :barf: However the, near-empty box of PBR reassured me that you do indeed have taste and class :)

Got earn a spot in the fridge eh! Thatll bring out good work ethics!:D GHaile

Jonny you even have people offering to marry you for that Mill! awesome[/QUOTE ] what are you talking about ryan? a buddy of mine has a mill that he lets me use when he is in the shop. i was offering to give jonny a call and give him some tips :p:D

I know Richard, I was just trying to be funny about you giving him a "Ring"... wasn't very funny.

I thought it was damn funny Ryan!

I thought it was pretty good too:D

Haven't had the time to do too much yet, but I did make a jig for cutting out lockbars for folders from 1/2" aluminum plate. It didn't turn out perfect, but definitely serviceable. I'm looking forward to learning more about this machine and getting lots of use out of it.

Here is a pic of the first metal chips I made with the new mill, after doing some practice work with G-10.
