Shot Show 2012

Just got a great idea. Tweener package deal. Buy all three. I originally wanted the BK17. Then I wanted a BK16 too because it looks like a good woods knife. Then Mr. Becker said that about the mini-5 being the world's best steak knife. It just sounded good. So, I need all three. As soon as possible. Besides the Springfield XD S .45, these Tweeners are probably my favorite from SHOT. I havn't seen everything, but I'm sure these are going to be a favorite. Thanks Moose.

I just got back from the SHOT Show. The BK16, BK17 and Mini-5 all feel great in the hand. It's no wonder Ethan calls the the BK16 the knife he's been looking for since he was 14 years old. I can't wait until they get released.

The clip point is most certainly my favorite of the three.

Agreed. I'm planning on replacing my EDC Gryphon M-10 with the BK-17. Sharpen the swedge, stipple the scales a bit, and you've got a dandy little back-cutting fighter that's also capable of every day utilitarian chores and can be sharpened with ease. That's my perfect EDC knife.

On the other hand, the other two Tweeners are mine as well. The BK-15 is going to live next to my computer, which is where I seem to eat the most. The perfect steak knife indeed. And the BK-16 is going to become my pack knife. I always have a fixed blade that rides next to my back-up gun in my backpack, which goes everywhere with me. Currently I've got my BK-2 in there, but it's a little big for the pocket I've got it in. But the BK-16 should fit just fine in there next to the baby Glock.

Really, I could genuinely use all the Tweeners.

But, I'm going to have to earn a BH stamp.

Woof. Tough. I'm not very communicative ... or terribly original. Well, outside the bounds of physics.

I'm working on my BH status as well. I love this hobby.

So when do you think we can expect to see the upgraded machax at dealers? The updates to it are worth me making sure I get the new one as opposed to old, especially for the coating! Thanks for the great coverage!

Figured it was some kind of firewater, but had to give you a little razz. Oh, didn't someone mention a BK&T caving type shoulder bag?!

That's true, I was looking forward to seeing something about the bag Ethan was so excited about.

wait, having read thru the whole thing, is the mystery knife still a mystery?? Or is the kitchen knife IT??

welllll, since you read the whole thing, unlike so many others :)

i can tell you :>

there are still mysteries :)

behold!

what we call : "the freak out" :>

i wouldn't worry, as you really can't buy the old one except for $$$ from various used sources. hasn't been in production for many a year.

the pommel extension is likely to be there for:

o aesthetic balance as all the others have it, for affect :)

o actual balance, makes it slightly less tip heavy and overall more balanced. the affected has effect.

o will provide a spot for smiting against with a baton should you need to drive it safely into something else (somewhat)

o certainly a good way to crush things, open lobsters, crabs, and clams.

o cuz like the honeybadger, it's badass...

oh, and well, originally i was told the machax was going to be ready pretty much the end of January... but it could be later. not too much later i hope ;)

the pommel extension is likely to be there for:

o aesthetic balance as all the others have it, for affect :) IMHO - adds weight, screw the esthetics

o actual balance, makes it slightly less tip heavy and overall more balanced. the affected has effect. tip heavy makes for a better chopper, at least IMHO

o will provide a spot for smiting against with a baton should you need to drive it safely into something else (somewhat) would make sense if the Machax had a straight blade, but of course it doesn't

o certainly a good way to crush things, open lobsters, crabs, and clams. perhaps, but it doesn't outweigh the negative (extra weight)

o cuz like the honeybadger, it's badass... I'll take your word for that.

oh, and well, originally i was told the machax was going to be ready pretty much the end of January... but it could be later. not too much later i hope ;)

Bladite, it may have been added for all the reasons you mentioned, but no advantage AFAIC. Of course, it can always be ground off.

Doc

well, i'm guessing at the reasons ... "because the others have it" is the best reason i can think of, other than skull crushing :) rawr!

i'm totally sure this blade will see mods that make me cringe, but removing the pommel, and drilling out the handle even more probably makes sense.

"filework" around the handle perimeter would look good, and shve some grams. the spaces could then be filled with epoxy if desired.

one could also thin the tang a lot, and then put on spacers and such, that would make it more forward heavy too

Ugh, I can't imagine beating a nice fine SHARP BK15 against a ceramic plate just to eat steak.
Generally I have no use at all for serrated blades, but steak knives are an exception - the peaks of the edge contact the plate (and get dull) while protecting the edges inside the serrations for all the cutting work.

you use a plate? heathen :) just a wooden steak board :)

or you can flip your plate over and hone your knife afterward...

serrations seem to me to tear the meat, not slice. i like me my steak sliced.

The USA Kabar kukri looking thing next to the Machax in this thread earlier posted. Does anyone have any info on it? Is it new? I don't recall seeing it before, but in all of this excitement I may have missed it somewhere. Would any fine gents know anything about it to share with an ole boy?

Not sure, must be the new design. Sure doesn't look like my KA-BAR kukri:

I think I'll be after the Machax, the Kabar thing, and kinda goes without saying but at least a couple tweeners. Thanks Warrior.

Kabar is for sure building some cool stuff.
