i wouldn't worry, as you really can't buy the old one except for $$$ from various used sources. hasn't been in production for many a year.
the pommel extension is likely to be there for:
o aesthetic balance as all the others have it, for affect
IMHO - adds weight, screw the esthetics
o actual balance, makes it slightly less tip heavy and overall more balanced. the affected has effect.
tip heavy makes for a better chopper, at least IMHO
o will provide a spot for smiting against with a baton should you need to drive it safely into something else (somewhat)
would make sense if the Machax had a straight blade, but of course it doesn't
o certainly a good way to crush things, open lobsters, crabs, and clams.
perhaps, but it doesn't outweigh the negative (extra weight)
o cuz like the honeybadger, it's badass...
I'll take your word for that.
oh, and well, originally i was told the machax was going to be ready pretty much the end of January... but it could be later. not too much later i hope
