Should Chris Reeve Knives should team up with Zero Tolerance?

I don't want a Ferrari design produced by Toyota. Even though I love our 4Runner and my 0770CF :p

Similar things happen all the time though. New Supra BMW/Toyota Collab for example, or the Scion FR-S/Toyota GT86 and Subaru BRZ. Don't get me started on VW/Porsche/Audi/Lamborghini and how much chassis and part sharing they have. Mercedes and their McLaren Collabs in the past.
Trust me it's way more common with cars than it is with knives :D

I'm probably odd man out again ... I own ZTs ... several ... but pleaseee do not put a flipper on a Sebenza!!!

That is one of the biggest draws for me and many others ... and I don't see tolerance improvements by doing a colaberation ...

If CRK wanted to offer a different steel ... I would hope they would stay in the intermediate range that takes a great edge and is easy to touch up and resharpen ... not go some exotic super steel that I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars for equipment and add hours of sharpening time just so I can cut rope awhile longer

ZT definately make some great knives and as I said I own several ... but I'm not seeing the benefit for CRK ... I don't think they are hurting for customers ... and they have always done their own thing and they kinda have it perfected.

And they release the Inkosi and boom ... can't find them they sell so fast until the intial rush passes ...

I'd love to see Chris Reeves team up with ZT. I'm sure legally there might be some barriers, but I think he could come up with some great designs.

CRK, eh.....they can keep, doing what they do.

I’d like to see ZT build SnGs.

This. Now that Strider is making hardly any production SnGs I wish that ZT would take over making the production SnG. The ZT 550 had a very similar feel to the Lego SnGs. They could make a great production version. The ZT Stider collabs unfortunately were all hit with an ugly stick by Ken Onion. (No offense)

That isn’t what McBurger wants though. He wants it that if you want an SnG you pay for a MSC custom.

There is a market for a flipper CRK just as there was a market for a non flipping Hinderer. The market is catching up with CRK and in the next few years they will have to migrate from S35vn in all of their folders. M390/20cv isn't much harder at all to sharpen than s35vn.

Just for clarity I never said their tolerances would be better with ZT I said they would be good and with that being said the tolerances of a ZT is dang good. The partnership with ZT would be to offer "more" in terms of design/steel choice without having to hurt production at CRK and putting a product out that CRK would be ok with unlike the unfortunate collab with CRKT.

CRK makes a great knife and I've owned several. I just think it would be a great partnership just as it has been for Rick.

This wouldn't interest me.

Bottom line, honestly, I'm not really interested in CRK as a design outfit. I'm interested in Chris Reeve as a knife designer. It was his insane dedication to a concept that made CRK interesting. And while I'd sure as hell pay attention if Chris Reeve came out with a ZT collab, it doesn't seem likely.

I wish they would team up and then maybe we could get a CRK that could be opened without tearing your thumb off

I actually find the m390 family of steels to be easier to sharpen than s35vn. I don’t know how they achieved this but I am always shocked at how well it responds to sharpening.

I have the CRK front flipper. (Always thought the Gareth Bull Shamwari looked alot like a Chris Reeve)

Booooo....

Zt makes knives lacking any warmth and teaming up with CR would only create a cold and empty vessel....

Collaborating with ZT hasn't seemed to hurt Hinderer, Emerson

Hinderer's and Emerson's whole reputations are based on design, but they're infamous for poor fit and finish. With ZT manufacturing partnerships, they took a step up.

CRK's whole reputation is based on manufacturing quality, but they're infamous for fairly primitive design. With a ZT manufacturing partnership they'd be taking a step down.

if CRK wants new designs, they can go straight to some designers. They should partner with Scott Cook or Ray Laconico. They don't need ZT.

If CRK wants better blades (say a prayer) they just need to source the metal and/or find a better HT in Boise. They don't need ZT.

I don't see it this way. CRK's reputation would still be manufacturing quality; they would just bring more to market by a company that is catching up with them daily in manufacturing quality but putting out more designs with equal to better materials. This would be a way for them to flex their creative muscles without sacrificing their own brand. It's a way to stay relevant without sacrificing their current business model. Again, I've owned double digit CRK's and I think they're great but I'm blown away by what ZT delivered to me for $240.00.

If CRK doesn't evolve in some form or fashion they'll go the way of the dinosaur. Technology is catching up with them and making knives with better tolerances is becoming cheaper.

Yeah, I'd buy one but unfortunately I don't ever see that collab happening. Interesting topic though.

I am not sure this can be a great partnership.

Having CRK moving for a new/better steel will be great for sure and I would like to get some 20cv or 110V modified for CRK but that is all what I would like from CRK.
Design and manufacturing quality is already good for me.

IMO ZT's collaboration is better for designer lacking the manufacturing expertise/quality ZT has or for custom makers looking for an industrial manufacturing process to cut their costs.

But nevertheless I like the many collaboration ZT had/have :)
