1) Seller's ad: "Paypal preferred...<snip>...Drop me a note if you're interested."

2) PM by me at 13:40: "I'll take it if you'll take a USPS Money Order."

3) Post to for sale thread by me at 13:40: "PM Sent"

4) Post to for sale thread by another member at 14:07: "I'll take it"

5) Update to for sale thread by seller at 15:34: "Sold"

Sold...but not to me. Sold to "another member" (I have no beef with him). I did not get the courtesy of any response from the seller whatsoever. From now on must I assume that "Paypal preferred" means "Take a hike if you don't use Paypal"?

I reckon "paypal preferred" means if the next time I check my mail there's a bunch of offers to buy I'll take the first one that said he would pay by paypal. And probably post in the thread that it's sold rather than send separate messages to everyone....

I've done this before. If I write "PP Preferred" and I get offers to pay by MO and PP the same day, I usually go with the PP offer, even if it came in later. First come, first serve is not a forum rule.

That said, if I've done a deal with someone before, I'll usually take a MO over PP, because I know they're good for it. It may not be a normal thing, but half the people who offer to pay by MO back out on me.

Do you know it was sold to the poster at 14:07? Maybe it was already sold at 13:40 when you PMed and it just hadn't been marked yet. I know that's happened to me.

No, it's common courtesy. :thumbdn:

I've been known to *overnight* money orders to some folks.

If the seller said "First I'll take it get's it, MO or PP", I might agree. But, he said "PP preferred". Maybe he needed the money that day, or maybe he just really likes PP. Whatever the reason, knives are sold at the seller's discretion.

Same here.

Yet another example of why I am not a fan of the "I'll take it" post in threads. The poster often wrongly assumes he has an actual CLAIM on the knife by virtue of being the 1st person to post "I T I" publicly....

I know I *hate* when people do that.

Annoying but there will always be another good deal around the corner...I have complained about the same thing myself but was shown that it aint really that big a deal.

DON'T use Paypal...it sucks!!!

I don't purchase with Paypal and I don't take Paypal.....

BUT...the person doing the selling sets the terms of the sale...I recently sold a knife, with first "i'll take it posted here gets it", and one interested potential buyer requested additional photos....first of all...they were lucky there were ANY photos, 'cause I are a sucky photographer...but secondly, the buyer came right after that post, and said "I'll take it."....one and done...so sad, too bad, Mr. "more photos, please".:D

No you shouldn't be ticked...you should be relieved that you didn't have to do business with a person showing very strong potential of pud-like tendencies.;)

Same here, I've lost out on a couple knives because I sent a PM saying I will take the knife, and someone else posted an "I'll take it" in the thread. Don't care for the practice, but such is life and I just put it behind me and move on.

Got similar problems… even had negotiations with seller, then after three days PMed him and was answered that knife has been sold. Not nice, to me, but not the end of the world either.

The only thing the seller did wrong by my way of thinking is not responding to your PM. A simple no would suffice, but not responding at all is not kewl.

ABSOFrikkinlutely.

Whether or not you like PayPal is irrelevant. The seller did NOT specify PayPal only. According to bluejaunte it was preferred. Open to all payments. Let's discuss.

"Drop me a note if you are interested". Done. Timely response with a supporting note in the thread.

Sold to a later party.

In the end, it IS the sellers perogative, We'll agree. But how you handle your transactions on this forum is a measure of your sense of fair play.

So, in fairness, I think bluejaunte has every reason to be ticked. And that's all he can be. I won't slam the seller or say it's all BS. But he can own being ticked. I'd be.

If you are an employee of some company, and that company has a first come first served policy then you are obligated to sell to the first person.

Otherwise sell to whom you want under the rules you choose.

You might even choose to sell for less to a friend who asks late with no other agreement pending.

Me, I absolutly prefer US postal money orders and got no use for PayPal.

How to decide who to sell to is a very personal Thing, highly Subjective.

I think, first come first served should be honored if posted that way in the for sale add.

Other than that I do not think it is anything to get upset about.

I'm not saying that you should be happy with what happened, just that you shouldn't let it get to you. Life's to short for people to let that kind of stuff get to them.

Most of my sales Have been coming through PMs, If someone wants to pay with a money order no problem! I go by time stamp I beleive this is the fair way of doing it, so far first come first served! I have had a couple of paypal buyers disappear before hitting the send money button! Money orders have been pretty rapid!
