Show Me Your Beaters!

Today I stripped my AK and peened some texture into her pommel. As I was sprucing her up (or down, depending on how you look at it), I got to wondering ...

What are your beaters? I wanna see 'em! CRKTs, mid-range Spydies and BMs, ZTs, ESEEs, Busses and other bruisers--whatever knife you grab when things get stoopid--show and tell! I wanna see the b!itches and b@st@rds you ride hard, ride often, and hang up wet. And tell a story or two, if you've got 'em. And yeah, I know, I know ... there are SO many knives to choose from! Well, pick The One (or Two or Three) you'd have six kids and a mortgage with, if it were walking on two legs. .

Oh, and if you can't "show" pics or link to them, feel free to "tell" a tale or two. I don't want to leave the pic-impaired out of this thread.

Cheers!

Martindale machete I've used to edge the lawn. Just file the dings out of the edge.
Becker I use whenever I need to chop through roots in the yard. Not afraid to chop into the dirt with it. Sharpens right back up.
S&W Baby SWAT framelock. Don't care if this one gets dirty. Lost it in the yard for a couple of days a while back. Probably stepped on it a few times before I found it. Had some slight discoloration on the blade from being in damp dirt and weeds, but was fine otherwise.

Very nice. Re: the 710, some complain about the BK coating looking bad once it starts wearing off, but when I see that wear, I think, "Now there's a knife that's being loved."

Thanks for the SOG before-and-after. Nice work!

Great machete, and that Becker's obvious been well loved. Gotta love the bright lanyards.

The Kershaw's a Blur, right? Looks like you're getting all the bang for your buck.

Nice ZT. I think that's the same model I've been eyeing lately ...

1992 version of the Spyderco Military. Had to replace the clip screws when the originals stripped. Took it apart, re-drilled and tapped them, installed larger screws and sanded off the excess. Re-assembled. Heat shrink tubing on the non-blackened clip. Seen a lot of hard use, and is still my daily carry. Swapped out with an all black for black pants carry these days.

Wow, long-term relationship there, 55. That's what I wanna see and hear about! Never seen a 440v blade before, though. Amazing that she's still going strong.

P.S. Nice Han Solo job on the screws and shrink wrap!

The original Military's were offered in both CPM 440V and ATS 34. I at one time had a fully serrated ATS 34 bladed Millie. But a moment of weakness and I sold it to a friend, mostly due to my hating serrated knives. Wish I would have kept it now, for it's total rarity.

That 440V is pretty tough, let me tell you. I've not had any problems with it chipping, but truthfully I am not cutting nails with it either. ;-)
The shrink wrap comes and goes, depending on my mood. The screws have not been a problem since I upsized them. The originals stripped out when the clip snagged on something, also bending the clip. The screws are available from hobby shops that cater to radio control model aviation buffs, usually used for motor mounts.

I have a bunch of knives, easily over 100 really nice ones, a lot unobtainium. But my three Military's are my favorites.

1992 version with two new ones bought in 2012, the one on the right being a leftie. I am ambidextrous and like to be able to access a knife with either hand and have it be the same.
You'll note that despite being sharpened countless times, the blade shape does not appear any different than the two new ones. It is about 1/32 of an inch shorter after 21 years of use.

Nice family of Milies! It's awesome that your '92 still has almost all its steel. I've taken a lot off my AK--the point is almost exposed even when the blade is closed--but I've always treated her as a one-night stand ... feel a bit guilty about that, considering her fidelity.

Thanks for the tips for replacing the screws: I can easily see myself having to hit the hobby shop sometime soon. The oversize screws look good, too!

I have a Mili and a Para1 myself. I usually grab the Para1 when I get tired of the AK. The Para1's skinned and gutted small game. I love that knife. And man, do I love Spyd's DLC--that just *will not* come off, and it's almost smooth as naked steel.

Anyway, that Izula looks like she's paid her dues and then some. Excellent! Love that no-nonsense lanyard, the (way) oversized hole, and the tan scales. The photo's appropriate, too. Thanks for sharing, G-moll!

Get the screws long. The tap will also be available at the same hobby shop, more than likely. Dis-assemble the knife, drill and tap the holes. Install the screws with blue Loctite. Sand off the excessive length with a drill mounted sanding disc. The extra length makes them less likely to strip out again. Then re-assemble the knife and go on your merry way. You'll probably never need replace them again after this.

P.S. "Unobtainium"! Yes!

These four are pure Unobtainium.
1. Kershaw JYD II Ti SG2
2. Benchmade Skirmish, serialized limited edition from the Cutlery Shoppe
3. Mission MPF, bought in 93.
4. Camillus Cuda Maxx 5.5 D2.

In an unobtainium CAO Soprano series collector cigar box, satin lined.

And another with the intact stogies, since I smoked the other four to make room for the blades. ;-)

Here we go! All of my knives are beaters! Unfortunately I let the RC-4 go with much regret now! I will probably get a new one at some point, its a great knife so ifs ands or buts. I have a RMD CG on the way that should be a new beater. Should come this week!!!!!

Here's a few that I can depend on in the outdoors as "beaters". Once they've been given some responsible abuse, I quickly give them some cleaning and loving.... :D

Siegle "Hardcore", Condor "Hudson Bay", Becker "BK2", Breeden custom, D. Farmer "Tribal EDC", ML Kephart, J.Watson "Ti EDC", Three Sisters Forge "Beast, and Grayman "Satu"
