Show Me Your Beaters!

HWF, I keep reading about the Spydie H1s ... I may catch a Salt bug soon. THANKS for the help! :p Ha, but seriously, love that knife. Thanks for the pic.

Ha! You're welcome. ;)

My salt rides in my swim trunks every single day at work. Never had any issues. Works for me.

My dad's circa 1950. I used it a lot growing up. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1372035012.375355.jpg
The SnG is my "go to" but I don't scrape paint, cut drywall, baton, or stab bricks with it. Sorry if it doesn't pass the "beater" sniff test. It will probably look much different a year from now. This is a good thread, but if your only contribution is to say, "That doesn't look like beater" you're not adding anything.

Good work on that Randall, Jim. Carpentry, huh? Guess that'll do it.

Jroden, I'm ashamed to say that I didn't know Busse makes/made a khukuri. Now I've seen God. What's the handle material?

stabilized redwood burl ( she started life with orange and black G10). Busse has put out a couple different Kuks, this model being my favorite.

My Zilla is my girl when ever something just absolutely needs to be destroyed. Stump removal, trees chopped down, sections of plywood split, she has done it all and just laughed.

Awesome blades! Looks like another D. Farmer in the mix.

*nods* That is some gorgeous burl on a gorgeous khukuri. That would probably be my Busse Grail, unless there's some Bowie-type Busse out there that I've not seen. Oh, and btw, nice Para2. I like the green handle. Obviously the universe simply doesn't want me to be content with my Para1.

Beautiful knife, Mjolnir. Cool that it was your dad's. I'm afraid I don't know the knife, though, unless it's a Marbles or ... Cattaraugus?

Thanks for the pic, Southpaw. Once again, I must confess being ignorant of the make and model.

And yeah, not to repeat myself, but ... I don't want this thread to turn into a beat-down over what is or is not a 'beater.' We wouldn't openly insult each other's Old Ladies (I hope): let's show the same courtesy for our Ol' Metal Maids, eh?

That is what I was thinking. Thought I was going crazy.

Same here but I didn't want to post without finding my pics. Some people like to throw up pics of their expensive toys that have not a scratch on them. That's fine but doesn't qualify for this thread. I'll go dig up my pics later. Tram 14" trail, machete, ESEE Junglas, ESEE Izula II, PM2, and my Opinel all fit this category.

I'd like to see and hear more about the Junglas. I'm unsure what to make of it. How do you use it? (Is it true that narc agents use it to clear marijuana plants?) My only points of comparison would probably be a Marbles Trailmaker, small-to-medium khukuris, and a TOPS Armageddon. *Shrug*

Curious about the Opinel, too ...

I use the Junglas on camping trips. Hell of a chopper, pretty good at controlled cutting too. I switch it out for and ESEE 6 or something smaller paired with a 14"-20" machete when I'm bushwhacking, clearing trails etc. The Junglas works great as a replacement for a hatchet and/or large knife/short machete. These are old pics of my first Opinel, Junglas, Izula and an old Kershaw Blur. Pics were from right after I joined bladeforums.

Opinels are amazing, especially for the price. I use them in the kitchen, in the yard, at work, pretty much as a hardcore beater, but both the carbon and stainless sharpen up very well and hold their edge. Not to mention that it's a full flat grind with almost zero bevel, which means it is one of the best slicing folders out there.

Cool pics! And, man! I love that ground-down Blur. Looks like you def. got your money out of it. Was that knife a combo edge once upon a time?

You've convinced me to get an Opinel. Useful, classy, not too threatening to NKP, and "full flat grind" ... them's the magic words for me.

Thanks for the Junglas info.

No prob man! Yes, the Blur was a combo edge, used and abused and I felt ok with converting it to plain edge as the serrations wore down. The Opinels are very fun to mod handle-wise, as there is a lot of excess to work with and you can add finger cutouts, burn patterns into the wood etc to make it your own. I HIGHLY suggest Baryonyx Knife Co. for the Opinel, as Benjamin (FortyTwoBlades on this forum) is a really stand-up guy and will closely inspect any product before it is sent to you. His special grade options always make the products that much better.

Thanks, RemyKaze. I've bookmarked Baryonyx and will check out the site.

I was just weighing the pros and cons of the Opinel vs. the Svord. The Opinel seems more my style, but at these kinds of prices, I can afford to experiment. Hell, the prices are laughable compared to what we pay for Usual Suspect knives. Anyway, yeah ... could def. see myself breaking out the wood carving tools and customizing a Svord. The Opinel might be a little trickier.

I have been so mean to this knife, it's not even funny. I carried it when I was firefighting, house painting, and working in an outdoor nursery. It has cut dry wall, opened paint cans, cut fire hose, opened cans....I mean, I have beat the absolute crap out of this thing. It's retired now, but I will always have it.

Marc, the fixed blade says Boy Scouts of America on it I believe. I'll look and see if I can make out anything else.
Travis I read your review and it shows the DGG is not weak. You definitely run that one hard.
Nikki, that knife looks like it's earned a little rest.

I like the Svord better, honestly. But I like a locking blade most of all, and the Opinel has a very strong lock while the Svord Peasant is a friction folder and is held open by your hand gripping the handle.

These are my hard use, don't give a crap what they look like as long as they are sharp knives... The SOG has been with me since 1996 and has chopped everything from coconuts to crocodiles to firewood.

Nikki: Well, that's a good testimony for Benchmade's 154cm. Glad that blade served you well. Is the sheepsfoot hollow ground? V-ground? I've always *really* liked the Griptilian sheepsfoot, but I only own a drop point. Call me crazy, but the sheepsfoot looks kinda like a T-rex head in profile, with a large, cartoon eye ... er, okay. Never mind. Thanks for sharing! :D

Remy: I'm sure I'll break down and get a Peasant or two (then I can say I own peasants). I'd really have to get used to that free-swinging blade though. And, just my luck, some cop having a bad day would insist that the Svord's an ancient gravity knife. :grumpy: Humbug.

Mjolnir: A BSA fixed-blade? Yeah, I'd like to know more if you can find anything out. Guess I joined the Scouts during the wrong era: all I have is my little pocket knife from the '80s. Cool and very sharp little knife, but it amuses me: everything locks on it *except* the blade and the awl. It's like somebody feared we'd all go West Side Story in the Woods or something.

That's a very nice old SOG, Maprik. I'm liking the brass guard. What're the handle and blade materials?
