Show Me Your Beaters!

I really like the looks of that smallish one with the black wrapped handle, on the left about half way down. Tell us about it please.

Chris,

I believe your asking about the David Farmer "Tribal EDC". It's 8" OAL with a 3 7/8" blade of L6 steel and beyond criminally sharp. There's an epoxy impregnated leather w/hemp wrap on it and it's extremely comfortable.

Riverwarrrior: I must, alas, admit ignorance to most of your knives, but they look great. Did you RIT dye the micarta handles on the BK2? They look chocolate colored (yum). I also have a Condor Hudson Bay ... man, talk about bang for the buck! I love that knife. That Siegle looks like a superb camp/bushcraft knife. I may have to look up the "Hardcore" online.

Oh, and "responsible abuse" ... that's the best thing I've read all day. I'll be using that one, if you don't mind.

Ethan, those are beautiful knives. Rowen gets my vote for an all-rounder, but the biggun's got sex appeal. Great pic, too! Kinda funny how you got the "bloody" reflection on the knives' edges.

Nice knife, Mjolnir. Seems built entirely for function, and the beauty follows. Looks like it really goes well in the hand.

The original Military's were offered in both CPM 440V and ATS 34. I at one time had a fully serrated ATS 34 bladed Millie. But a moment of weakness and I sold it to a friend, mostly due to my hating serrated knives. Wish I would have kept it now, for it's total rarity.

That 440V is pretty tough, let me tell you. I've not had any problems with it chipping, but truthfully I am not cutting nails with it either. ;-)
The shrink wrap comes and goes, depending on my mood. The screws have not been a problem since I upsized them. The originals stripped out when the clip snagged on something, also bending the clip. The screws are available from hobby shops that cater to radio control model aviation buffs, usually used for motor mounts.

I have a bunch of knives, easily over 100 really nice ones, a lot unobtainium. But my three Military's are my favorites.

1992 version with two new ones bought in 2012, the one on the right being a leftie. I am ambidextrous and like to be able to access a knife with either hand and have it be the same.
You'll note that despite being sharpened countless times, the blade shape does not appear any different than the two new ones. It is about 1/32 of an inch shorter after 21 years of use.

How's the grip on your 1992? Is it g10?

Anyway, that Izula looks like she's paid her dues and then some. Excellent! Love that no-nonsense lanyard, the (way) oversized hole, and the tan scales. The photo's appropriate, too. Thanks for sharing, G-moll!

You got it! I need to put up a more recent picture of the Izula. She's taken more beatings and the coating is nearly off. I did a little file job on the handle as well. Thanks.

The BK2 actually has the after market tan micarta scales, but the lighting makes the color look darker I believe.

My Zilla is my girl when ever something just absolutely needs to be destroyed. Stump removal, trees chopped down, sections of plywood split, she has done it all and just laughed.

Good work on that Randall, Jim. Carpentry, huh? Guess that'll do it.

Jroden, I'm ashamed to say that I didn't know Busse makes/made a khukuri. Now I've seen God. What's the handle material?

Haha some of these are NOT beaters, but works of art.

my beater is a $5 spiderman folder I got from the tobacco shop to practice sharpening my sebenza.

its 440 china steel but this thing surprises everyone for its price but quality of blade.

also I have a kukri sirupati 25" for outdoor work.

thing is a crowbar with an edge basically.

My somewhat-cheap AK-47 is what inspired me to start this thread, so I understand when a few folk say, "That's not a beater. THIS is a beater!" But let's not get into a d!ck beating contest, please. I'm going to give everyone the benefit of the doubt: If you use your tools hard (subjective as "hard" may be) and if you depend on them when poop hits the fan (whatever your definition of, er, "poop" may be), I don't care if your tool is a $10 knockoff or an expensive work of art. Some of these knives show their beatin' and their age. Others may age more gracefully. We're not in positions to judge. Let's keep this thread fun.

Besides, we don't really know what--or whom--these tools are beating, do we? ;)

Ok my misono swedish sujihiki 270mm could be a beater.

I use it for tough tasks that the yanagi wont do.

as a work tool, it has earned me more than 100,000k in its lifetime.

HWF, I keep reading about the Spydie H1s ... I may catch a Salt bug soon. THANKS for the help! :p Ha, but seriously, love that knife. Thanks for the pic.

Ah ... I wish we had pics of the sirupati and sujihiki. I'd especially like to see a 2'+ khukuri. But I'll use my imagination. Thanks for the entries!
