Show Me Your Beaters!

Nikki: Well, that's a good testimony for Benchmade's 154cm. Glad that blade served you well. Is the sheepsfoot hollow ground? V-ground? I've always *really* liked the Griptilian sheepsfoot, but I only own a drop point. Call me crazy, but the sheepsfoot looks kinda like a T-rex head in profile, with a large, cartoon eye ... er, okay. Never mind. Thanks for sharing! :D

It's hollow ground...and it always looked like a pterodactyl to me. :)

P.S. Crocodiles? Do I sense a story worth telling? :)

Don't know the steel! The handle is some kind of rubbery material and it's held up really well!!!

I live in Papua New Guinea for 3 years doing medical research in very remote areas of the Sepik River. The river was the major source of food and $$$ and crocs were either eaten or if young, sold to Croc farms on the river who raised the crocs for their skin and bush-meat market. I'd go out with some friends at night in these long skinny canoes hollowed out from trees and we'd quietly cruise the grassy areas for 2-3 foot crocs, locating them by the reflection of their eyes sticking out of the water. The light would hold their attention and we'd glide up to them and just grab them by the neck and tie them up for delivery to the croc farm the next day. We'd catch maybe 6-10 on a good night, 2-3 on a bad night and often would end up somewhere roasting one over the fire at 2-3am. That SOG has gutted a few crocs. I wish I knew what the steel was, the blade is unmarked. But it holds a great edge and that's hacking open a lot of coconuts for drinking and chopping wood as well. I'd just keep it razor sharp on a 2 sided sharpening stone I picked up at a hardware store...

This knife was once stolen from me in a village. I had it attached to my backpack and it was sitting in the truck and I noticed it was gone just before we drove away. I mentioned it to the village leader who was appalled and very ashamed. He called all the village together and chastised the thief for taking the knife and asked that it be returned. Of course, no one in the area would have a knife like this so it would be hard to keep a secret. At the same time, there was a kind of wild west attitude out there where stealing wasn't exactly frowned upon if you could get away with it. Anyway, the fear of sorcery is alive and well in these areas and there are many stories of "Sanguma" who are like voodoo witchdoctors and people die from their evil spells all the time. Weird stuff goes on out there for sure but those are other stories to be told... So I told the village leader that the knife was possessed by a spirit placed there by a Sanguma from my home in the U.S.A. This spirit was embodied in the knife and it was my protector and friend. I warned him that whoever stole the knife from me would soon become possessed by the spirit and it would cause them to go mad and murder their family and friends. He believed me 100% of course and the next day the knife was returned to me. The thief was not revealed to me but I didn't care, I was just happy to have the knife back. The story spread around the region pretty fast though and sometimes people would ask me if they could see the knife. They would stare at it and recoil from it a little, no one wanted to touch it. So, as you can imagine, this knife ain't going nowhere!!! I just recently had Tom Veff put a new edge on it because I had chipped it a few years back and was just living with it. Now it has a perfect mirror edge and it's shaving sharp...

... and it always looked like a pterodactyl to me. :)

BladeForums makes even Mondays fun.

Btw, is that supposed to be one of Xena's chakrams behind that Becker? How did you find that graphic? Or did you make it?

Speaking of South Asian blades, I'm a little surprised we haven't seen more khukuris on this thread. Did the Busse scare them off? ;)

It is Xena's chakram, lol. I found the graphic somewhere, and modified it in paint. Then The Warrior on the BK&T sub forum pimped it out for me.

That's the best thing I've read all week.

Crocs, wood, and coconuts? And the blade's still going strong after twenty years? Now I'm really curious about this mystery steel.

Steria: *Sigh* I wish I were out in the woods rather than behind a computer. Nice 'hit the trails' pic you have there.

I had to look up the 707 ... seems like a good bang-for-your-buck knife, yes?

As far as I know, this is the exact knife as the CRKT Drifter, only with the original manufacturers logo on it. I paid around $10 (you can find it for a little less and more...), but if you buy it with the CRKT logo it goes for about twice the amount (?). However, it is a good small knife with solid lockup and fast deployment (fun to play with). Easy to sharp, holds an edge well, has a nice belly and is overall a very good buy in my opinion.

On a sidenote; the Timberland shoes are very good and comfortable, breathes well as well as keeping the weather elements away from your feet. I believe in proper footwear.

Well played, sir. Well played.

Samon: Superb stuff! I love that machete on top. Think I've seen it twice now ... what is it? A 'roided-out Golok?

Steria: Ha, I'd definitely traipse down a footwear sidetrack. Could we get away with it if we keep mentioning boot knives and Soviet shoe daggers?

My first "modern" folder was the BM Vex, same steel stock as the 707, and yeah, I learned to sharpen with that knife, too. I still love and admire the Vex's design and materials, despite their shortcomings. Something special about firsts, I guess.

Yeah it's made by Martindale, the same company thatmake the golok (third one down). It's one from the vietnam era that I modded the handle and tip on, I use it every week to hack away at my unruley garden!

Martindale ... got it.

So many blades I didn't know I needed till this thread started ... *frowns at HWF*

just checking.. you were talking about the large machete and not the knife , right?

got a feeling i might have read something differently..

Samon: Yeah, I was asking you about the large machete. You got it. Then I poked a bit at HWF 'cause he keeps taunting me with his salty Spydie.

Wow. That's the first Emerson I've seen that I really like. I'm a sucker for--not sure what it's called--that extra high swedge near the tip, like what's on the BM Onslaught or the Turkish kilij. VERY nice glassy edge, too. Looks like this knife's enjoyed some hard love.

Thanks Marc, yeah...the black was really getting worn and it was looking a little neglected. I just evened it out :D
The 20 deg polished chisel edge is downright scary.... 154 CM makes it easy to sharpen and or profile when needed...Now
if i can only get it to stop destroying my pants pockets i'd probably carry it more.
