Show me your STACKED LEATHER HANDLE Knife/Knives!

A necro-thread worth reviving, IMHO.

And in case the OP is reading this, no, these are better called "stick tangs". The Malanika puukko is probably better called a "hidden tang" or even a "rat tail tang". I love my Malanika (carrying it now, in fact); alas, not stacked leather.

I will have to post my USN Mk 1 later.

Agreed. KA-BARs are full tang construction, but not full tang profile, so technically it's a stick tang. Not a rat tail, not a partial tang either.

so what do they use? the pic looks like it could be leather...
is it like a dyed birch bark or something?

Its birchbark, a very common traditional handle material that has been used for a very long time by most puukko makers.

I'm well acquainted with birch bark and puukot in general, but as a somewhat non-traditional puukko smith, Danijel Haramina has been known to use non-traditional materials. I believe this one is leather stacked. But I'll contact him and find out and report back. If I'm wrong, I'll stand corrected. 😎

Western had an interesting variation of stacked leather handle. The bifurcated tang. Essentially a double full length tang knife instead of having a hole in the middle the washers are H shaped.

So is it full width tang?

Speaking of full width tangs. How many holes can be drilled before its not really full anymore?

It is interesting, I wonder what weakness point that H shape has.

To answer your question, in my (non knife maker) experience, there are holes that must be drilled right, so that is that. Then there's some that is taken out to reduce weight, so if that is done right, in the right spots where no additional weak points are created, & enough material & width is kept so it doesn't look like a frame, that's a full tang as far as i'm concerned.

Thats not leather.....

That was my knife. I can assure you it was stacked leather. I custom ordered two puukkos from Danijel. The stacked leather one was 80CRV2 steel and the stacked birch was M4. Both turned out very nice.

This is his stacked birch bark:

I hope this clears up any confusion on the materials.

Your points are correct, but at some point you cross a line. Drill enough (or too many) holes and it becomes skeletonized. Full length and full width tang, but certainly not a full tang.
