Been meaning to get around to making one of these and I want to give credit to legendary sheath maker Sandy Morrissey for the advice and inspiration.
I really like how this style carries .. light as a feather.

Perfect Bud!
That is a real beauty

Hey Bud:

I knew your time with Sandy would result in something special. Very nice work my friend !

Was this a one off for your personal use or do you plan to offer them to the faithful ?

Peter

Awesome job Bud!

I have a rookie question. What is the design purpose of the split loops versus one narrower one. Is it for weight savings? Straddling a belt loop on your pants? Provide more flexibility of movement? Aesthetics only?

Thanks,

Phil

It's not a one off. I'll be making some more in a bit. Taking a week off from work next month and plan on spending it doing leather work.

That's a Sandy Morrissey trade mark (the frog). He explained it being for flexibility .. in that the loop will hug the contours of your hip better than a wide/flat/THICK piece of leather. He also showed me the tensile strength of lighter leather is MUCH stronger than you think. The loop is made with 6/7oz leather.

Actually, it's not the frog ( the belt like piece that goes around the sheath) that's a Sandy trademark, it's more the split loop. Sandy goes way, way back, but the frog has been in use even longer. It's often used with a Sam Browne stud on the sheath body that allows the sheath to be taken off and carried under a belt sash. Think back to Jim Bowie days. The split loop really helps to distribute the weight of a large knife on the belt. A heavy knife will ride solid and move with the body when the split is used. It also lowers the handle position which eases drawing a larger/longer blade.

The strength of even thin leather is amazing! Nice work, Bud.

Thanks Rick. I didnt set mine up to be removed like Sandy showed me on a large Bowie, instead I borrowed from CRex and notched the sheath for added retention/security.

I (finally) picked up a Jou'Fuu Sheath. This one fits my Patch, Hiking Buddy, EDK, EDCII sized knives. The Frog and split belt loop make it one of the most unique sheaths in my set. Great detail and tooling on it as well. Nice work Bud.

Beautiful pics. My Jou'Fuu Frog sheath came the other day and it is a work of art. I asked the question on the frog being removable in another thread, but I think there was some misunderstanding on which piece was the actual 'frog' (ie. the belt split belt loop, which looks like frog legs) and it was stated as not removable.

However, the sheath arrived as I assumed the frog to work - the entire belt loop plus frog attachment (laced strap around the sheath) is able to slide down off the sheath itself, making it a pretty versatile piece. You can belt carry or remove the split loop/frog and toss the knife in your bag. Very nice!

That is a very classy looking sheath Nathan. Bud continues to show artistic innovation while maintaining a very high level of craftsmanship. That is a good match for your Scandi Hiking Buddy.

Phil

Thanks for the pics and kind words guys. I really do appreciate it, but my leather only compliments that totally badass scandi HB!!

Did I mention it's a totally badass 3/32" scandi HB? ;)

This thing is featherlight. Especially in this sheath.

On some of my sheaths the entire set up will slide downwards and off .. but not all. The Camp Nessie sheath, for example, will not allow for that to happen.
Therefore, I do not promote the frog (belt loop & laced strap) as removable.

Last weeks Duke, black herringbone burlap over black g10 with lime pinstripes, tapered tang, 3/16, and my first foray into this lovely realm (complemented by a very attractive Jou'Fuu sheath). I fear I may have been bitten by the Fiddleback bug. Don't worry though, it looks like the damage is mostly localized to my wallet!

Please excuse the image quality, my only camera at the moment is a potato.

Great looking Duke and sheath there Jesse!

Don't worry about the Fiddleback bug. The cure for it is you just have to get bitten by more.
