Show Off Your Leather!

I just found this forum and thread. I thought I would show a few sheaths typical of what I do.

These were the fun ones. I also do a standard bendover and am just getting back into some tooling. I look forward to spending some time here every day I can.

Custom leather making is the next thing I want to get into. I have always wanted to be able make sheaths, holsters and belts to my custom desires.

You guys are giving me ideas!
Here are a few of mine--not so much sheaths as pocket pouches for my fancy EDC's.

Nice work guys. Enjoyed the show. What an inspiration and wealth of information. Just love this site. Thanks, Loosearrow

A big dangler I just finished.

The loop is yet to come. I lost my line 24 snap setter. :grumpy:

Absoutely stunning work!! Life is too short to have an ugly sheath. Thanks for the inspiration. Form, function, artistic freedom such talent and years of experience. Nice to see it in one package. It's like watching a 4th of July fireworks show. Lots of OOOHHH and AAHHHHHHS. Regards, Loosearrow

last year the pastor of my chuch, an avid outdoorsman, shot a little 4 point buck and challanged me to do something with the antlers. I made him a little knife and fork set. Here's the result.

I have done a few skandi type pouch sheaths for myself and a couple others (like in my avatar) but recently I became inspired by the work of Karen Shook who does the sheaths for Daniel Winkler.

I recently picked up a Matt Roberts hunter that came without a sheath and thought to use that inspiration to try something new.
It's regular shoulder leather for the inner sheath and belt loop, then all covered with deertan sheepskin. Rawhide lacing and stained.
Here's how it worked out. I was particularly pleased with the way the stain created a stripey pattern.

one last one for you, had to stitch around and up along the bottom, you can see
where the cut is where I removed some leather in order for the top area to fold down
evenly, which helps to prevent the pucker from wrapping the leather around the knife;

Thanks. It's rawhide lacing available by the spool. Soak it to soften it, do your lacing and once dry it shrinks and gets very stiff. It's great stuff.

Greetings everyone,

This is my latest sheath. I made it from 8-9 oz vegetable tanned leather and dyed it British Tan.

Thanks for the info - what size lace is it and where do you get it, if you don't mind?? We have Tandy LeatherFactory down here in Texas and the smallest they have is 3/32".

Here is the process of making a Sheath as demonstrated by Alex Shamgar
of Israel in my book "The Art of Modern Custom Knifemaking" (2006).

Alex is also a great knifemaker, and the sheath was made for the Bowie
he created (shown here) for a friend....

The book displays about 100 knifemaking related processes, among them,
Folder making, Making a Fixed Blade, creating Damascus, Carving, Scrimshaw
Engraving and Sheath Making.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Here is Alex Shamgar making a sheath of different design,
this time using a lizard skin inlay.
