Show off your traditional knife and Lighter

I'd love to see it lit once you get it setup. I'm watching the game tonight too 😂

And very cool knife! Schrade's started my knife collection off. I believe I read it is similar to the 93OT. I think that was only offered in stainless. Is yours stainless as well?
I’ll show it burning tomorrow. The couple of 93OT Old Timers I have are marked Schrade+, this one is not so marked, but the blades look stainless steel to me. I’ll touch it with a Gunblue Pen tomorrow and make sure. This one is different from the others I have and have seen pictured, the Sheepfoot blade nailnick is on the Pile side of the knife, both nicks are normally found on the Mark side. OH

If memory serves (and increasingly it does not), the 893 was a SFO for K-Mart back in the day and has carbon steel blades. Very nice!

Lithicus - Thanks for describing the ‘bag trick’, etc. I think I’ll give it a shot!
Of course! Just checked the log from my early research. I went from 10 days before running dry using a Zippo "as-is" to 16 days with cotton bacon and the bag trick. It does take more fuel. So it's not necessarily more efficient, although I'm sure it is too some extent. It just helps with not needing to refill it constantly 😉

Thanks for that information, I’ll be sure to give it a blue pen check and report back. That would explain why I cannot find the model in any of the Schrade price lists and catalogs. OH

You need one of these :D

I had no idea those existed either! My matchbooks usually stay in the car or at my desk as those are the two most likely places I'll want to smoke a cigarette but be unable to use my zippo. Usually not because of low fuel, but rather the rare occasion that my flint goes out while I'm driving and I don't want to pull over or while I'm in the middle of something at my desk and simply can't be bothered hahahh

I was wondering if anyone was going to post these! They are an alternative to the "bag trick". I've heard they work quite well! Only complaint I've read is that they wear over time and don't seal as well after some heavy use. Either way, a very cool idea and even more interesting you already had one!

The one on the right, I believe, looks very similar to a lighter I was going to post today 😁 I don't know much about non-zippo lighters, so maybe someone can chime in with interesting information about them!

And, as always, beautiful lamb in your photos. I'll have to include my only lamb in a picture later today!

Got it up and running on butane, very easy to setup. Think I will pull out another and convert it, I can keep one in the car and one in the pickup. OH
Ps this butane insert only burns if you keep your finger depressing the button, shuts off immediately when you remove your finger.
PPs. F fishinfs L lithicus used the bluing pen on it, the blade steel in the Schrade 893 is stainless steel.

You don't see matchbooks here so much anymore unfortunately :( A lot of businesses used to use them as an advertising tool, but with far fewer people smoking, matchbooks perhaps aren't a good form of advertising. I have a load of them in the kitchen drawer ;)

I think they could be improved upon, but they were very inexpensive

I think I might have given those two to paulhilborn paulhilborn :) I know what a few forum members collect, and pick things up for them when I can :) Thank you very much, look forward to seeing your Lambsfoot

Very cool flame, indeed! For some reason, I always associate butane with those torch lighters. An open flame butane zippo insert is about as close to the best of both worlds as you can get it seems!

And thanks for checking that steel! I own one Uncle Henry and quite a few Old Timers. But, still do not own a single Schrade-branded Schrade. I've been looking to rectify that, but my tastes have developed and I've been hoping to find one in bone at a reasonable price. They aren't easy to find! I love the Schrade crest-style shield though 😀

Bourbon, cigars, and slipjoints. How could you go wrong!? Love those wooden handles too btw 😀
Didn’t even realize the trifecta when I posted. The Zippo was from a late friend’s restaurant/club in NY, the gas lighter was a GAW from a bourbon distributor and most importantly the Tom Bullard slipjoint was from the exchange.

Yes it’s a Thorens self lighter 👌 Great lighter of its day, still working well now 👌
I just watched a video on it. Pretty cool how it works! It was hard to tell from the videos, does that cap thing snuff the flame? If so, I bet it conserves fuel well! Most of the evaporation from a Zippo actually comes through the wick and the fact that it's not tightly covered.

It's amazing to me how, like traditional knives, these lighters stand the test of time. I feel so much in our world now is throw away, replaceable, disposable items. I always appreciate something that is built to last 😉
