Nice pictures. Off topic, but I am curious as to what Tim is carrying on his belt?

I think this should be the basis of your next book...or at least...the next, next , next book. I love workshops.

Hello John L,

In my third book "... Custom Knifemaking" you will be able
to enjoy about 1,600 workshop pictures displaying 100 custom
knife related projects in the making....

All the best,

Pictures like this are endlessly fascinating. I just keep looking at all the little nooks and crannies..
Thanks and I hope to see more.

great thread, David. So interesting to see the shop layouts. Gives a guy some good ideas:thumbup::cool:
That panoramic shot is really cool. I think I will make that my new desk top picture.:)

Here are three beautiful pictures shot by Heather and Kevin Harvey
in their workshop in South Africa. These pictures were part of the
documentation of making a sword they did for my 3rd book,
"The Art of Modern Custom Knifemaking"

Their workshop was well lit with natural daylight from the outside
and complementing artificial lighting (fluorescent). The combination
of these two light sources demanded a little color correcting but the
end result was stunning.
The pictures in this case look great also because they were cleverly
planned by two people who know what they are doing.... :)

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

That is why I like that book SO MUCH. Your books are amongst my most frequently viewed ones David. I appreciate what you do immensely!

I also love to see shops and machinery. GREAT thread idea.

Thanks,
Peter

Thats the 1st thought I had also. Great pic's as usual DDD. I have 4 of your book and I'm looking forword to this one.

I'll post pics of my smithy and shop when I get everything straightened back out.... although there's not much to look at :p bunch of files, pile of sandpaper and a bucket of sweat.

I'm curious about a couple of things:

Why does Tim have 2 flat platens set up in his 3 grinder bunch?

How often has Mrs. Harvey burned the end of her ponytail?

I love Jurgen's studio/shop. Just looking at the curves inspire!

This, Will, is what she wrote about this in their section
in my book:
"...If you are wondering about the hair catching alight...
well it has never yet happened, just remember not to use
hair spray before forging!"

All the best,

This is one for those who like a compact workshop....
Stefan Steigerwald (Germany) has it this way!

All the best,

Not that mine is much , but here you go , it is currently undergoing a massive clean out and a gut & rebuild inside.

My 1,100 sq ft shop has a Bader BIII , 2 floor production drill presses , 2 blast cabinets , a couple 1x42 belt sanders , 4x36 belt sander , 9" reversible disk , 7 HP compressor ,HF metalcutting band saw , HF Mini Mill ( just got it , haven't milled anything yet ) , 2 brick forge with a propane forge still being built , also have a separate leather working room . There is a Index 55 mill in the shop , owned by a neighbor , and an old Davis 14x40 lathe owed by the same neighbor.

Old picture of the shop , taken when I was replacing the roof on the main house:

Yup , its a mess....sometimes more than others:

Home-brew reversible disk setup:

notice the mandatory archery straw bales outside the shop , that is part of my 20 - 30 yard practice range.

Indeed the leather room is just as messy
