Show us your grinder!

Lets keep this thread going and see how many different types of grinders people use to make knives. I'll post pictures of my grinders tomorrow.

Your photos may inspire someone to build a grinder.

After grinding blades for a dozen years these four grinders are the ones that stayed; they worked.

This was my first buy; its a Pro-cut machine with a 1 1/2 hp-vs drive. I reworked the platen, heat treated it and added glass. It still works fine and handles the profiling and handles.

This KMG is run on a 3 HP motor with a six inch drive wheel it has three speeds slow medium and blazing; around 5400sfm. I have a 5 inch wheel and a small wheel arm to go with it.

The quench tank swings on a pivot, it is topped up from the little hose bib above it. It can be moved from grinder to grinder position as needed. The pivot is made from one of those seats we had in 9th grade lab, that were hinged to the tables at the corners.

This is a mobile 2X72 grinder that can be taken with you or set up in the shop in whatever location its needed.

This side view shows the construction of the adjustable work rest. It moves up and down as well as in and out. It came off a mobile miter saw.

This 9 inch disc is attached to the mobile grinder table. It uses a 1 1/2 hp VS motor with reverse. I used an upright disc for years but I prefer the horizontal disc hands down.

I use a Rod Nielson disc on this machine; the fence was machined out of 6061 aluminum stock. The bolt attached to the table in the front is used to steady the hand when sharpening.

Happy to answer any questions, Fred

Thanks for the chance I'll take number 11

First off is a GIB with a 1.5hp DC motor and a DC Drive. Behind it is a 1x42 Kalamazoo

Along with a homemade disk grinder/buffer. The buffer is only on when in use other wise it is off so it doesn't get grit in it.

Messy shop awards?

I'll take 717

My grinder from a few years back - right after being mounted.

As for grinders I have a variable speed Radius Master. Quite versatile little machine in that is can double as a horizontal grinder as well.

My grinder is a2" x 10" cone-loc drum sander. it takes shop roll belts
here's some pix
it opens pac man style and there are small spikes to hold the shop roll.

as you can see in this picture once the wheel is closed there is a cone shaped protrusion in the centre and a hub with a matching inverted cone. when the hub is tightened it squeezes the wheel closed and keeps the belt tight.

Ooh!! Maybe my luck from the iron in the hat at Bowies will hold out, I could use one of those (and I'm super cheap, so it'll be a while before I convince myself to buy one, let alone just get some new belts).

Thanks for the chance guys, I'll take #18 (if that's already taken, I'll do 65).

Here's my old grinder, a Craftsman handheld upside down in a vise.

But this year I finally saved up to get a real grinder.

That's a pretty interesting setup. I haven't seen that before.

I'll take 444 please and thank you. Here is my GIB build fresh out of the create from my move this spring.

DSC02463.jpg

I didn't even have a bench made for it yet, but I had to grind something so I just turned over the create wired everything up.

Number 789 for me please

Well....this is mine.....ground 3 blades on it thus far.

Been cleaned a bit more, but the setup remains the same.

P5110087.jpg

Made from my fathers drill, a 2cm drill bit, a hard plastic tub that was used for cream, added sandpaper for grip to the tub, a dumbell with weights to keep the tension in the belt, a piece of wood to elevate and keep the dumbell from rolling.
