Been in service for 40 something years and still going strong...other than the missing compass...:(

Ais, I use my 14,5,3,and 28 a lot for everything you listed. I have many Busse's I us Too. The Randall's perform awesome. I prefer O1 myself. I live along the Great Lakes and rust has never been an issue.

Thanks, I've seen some of your posts before, good stuff. My 5 should be coming back to me soon--I really can't wait. At this point I'm torn between a 16 SP1 and a 14... either way, I'm going for single nickel hilt and either border patrol or single finger groove micarta. I love my Busses--they are beasts and performers, but there is just something very special about that Randall 5-6.

Thanks again

Wow, that's pretty darn amazing to see. The ones I've seen online typically do not have that much character--this one looks like it has stories to tell! Nice one man!

So my 5-6 came back to me from a trip back to RMK. It is literally perfect--they buffed the blade, sanded and fixed the butt, replaced the nut, and it seems like they re-treated/coated, sealed (?) the leather handle. They threw in a dark green paracord lanyard too. It is as if I got back an absolutely new knife--it was in great shape when it went out, but the work they did has brought it back to perfection. It's got a great edge to it too.

Now to get it dirty! Pics soon, I have not had the chance yet.

OK boys--I did the tell, here is the show... while it is still fresh and clean. I got a 10 mile, fairly rigorous hike coming soon, so it will not likely stay this way for long.

Here is the "before"... note the nut at the end and the darkness to the leather. When I got it it had no patina, I did that within a week of ownership...

The edge was very sharp when I got it back as well, but I sent it out that way, so I am not sure if it was my work or theirs. I think that they touched it up as well. I've stropped it a bit and is scary sharp. Other than that, I've been searching and contemplating options for my next one... such a sickness! I'm looking at the secondary market and AG Russell, since a 4+ year wait does not suit my disposition ;)

So far, I've narrowed it down between some version of the #16 SP1, #14, and the #12-9 w/14 grind... they are my favorites, with the #16 diver lurking in the shadows. We'll see how it goes! Thanks for looking and all the advice...

The shop did a great job restoring it. It really looks like a brand new knife!

Agreed--It didn't seem out of the ordinary, and the letter I received from Gary Randall confirmed the authenticity of the knife. He even told me it likely was made in the early 1990's, and said it was in fine shape. I like the roomy choil, personally; I use it for detailed work and I'm not worried about cutting my finger because it is 'cramped.'

Nice knife---love the model 5

I don't think he's referring to the length of the choil, but how much was removed from the actual cutting edge. Look where the choil starts sweeping down towards the cutting edge and it looks like it had quite a bit shaved off. Bigger pictures up top show it better than the smaller pics.

Beautiful knife by the way.

gotcha--it seems like they do that on the 5-6s... I have to compare it to other pics online for more insight. Thanks, btw.

This. You can compare it to Ragnerok's knife in the pic above. I still don't believe that any of the cutting edge was removed. Perhaps it's the angle that we are viewing that makes it appear that way. All the shop would have done to restore this knife is a simple light buffing probably taking less than 5-10 minutes total.
