Well I got her finished over the weekend, still needs a bit more simichrome on the pommel, but shes good to go.
I teamed her up with a new Spec-ops brand sheath that has been slightly modified.I replaced the liner with one that wasnt so loose on the blade and doesnt let it slop around.
Also replaced the keeper strap with one that is less bulky and has a matching brass snap.

Good job! It looks awesome!

Wow, that was a trip. I looked hard for an Astro but did not see one. I have a model 1 7" but I wish I would have ordered a bird and trout instead for it's everyday utility. Well, I will have to make one I guess. I got a Randall catalog back in 1984 but they were a bit too spendy for me then. What a great thread.

Hello all,

I've wanted one for a while, so when the opportunity came, I jumped on it. I believe this is a model 5-6 made of O1 steel. It is a 30 year old knife that the owner did not use--I bought it for what a new one would cost but luckily skipped the 4 year wait.

I am very impressed with this knife!

Looks like a #6, got one of these myself, take a look on the back of the sheath to see what the stamp says. I`m not a Randall expert but to my knowledge the #6 is an older version of the #5-6. Nice score.

Thanks guys--the back of the sheath does have a "6", but I figured it meant 6" and the knife was a model 5. Being fairly knew to Randalls, I was not totally sure--thanks for the clarification.

Some from my collection...

Beautiful knives! I was not ready for just how much I'd love my Randall... Next on my list is a #16 divers knife.

Waited close to 8 months to get this Randall model #15 from a dealer. It has not disappoint me. The wait is well worth it. It will be part of my hiking rotation knives.

I requested Eric Lind from Mashed Cat Outfitters to custom make this kydex sheath for it.

Really like that configuration. The squared-off hilt is still my favorite Randall option.

That Randall is very much to my liking--excellent taste in blades! I have lots of Busses and just one Randall, and I have to say that my Randall holds its own in a pretty tough crowd. Have you have a chance to put the Randall to use--if so, how does it compare to that Infimandu? Thanks.

I started off with Randall but now I have more Busses too. Randall design is so classic and I keep coming back to it. IMO, Randall is the Rolex equivalent in the knife world.

I am currently grounded in the house with my 1 month old first child [emoji16] Not really complaining as I get different kind of joy playing with her. Hence, I have not get the chance to use the #15. I did sharpened it when I received it. I noticed it is easier to get it shaving sharp compared to the SMD. I will say the Randall cuts better as it has a thinner edge. I might get the same result if I reprofile the SMD. I will post more info when I get the chance to use in a few months.

If you are not using the #15 as a combat knife, I will suggest you request the shop to not sharpen the top bevel. The other thing to note is I ordered my #15 in stainless steel. INFI is not stainless steel. My sweat and the humidity in Singapore, cause INFI to develop rust spots fairly quickly. Hence, I see myself moving towards stainless steel lately. The GSO5.1 in the picture is in CPM20CV. I skipped the 3V version to avoid dealing with rust issue.

Thanks for the reply--I'm more or less in the same boat! I have a newborn, just about three weeks (she's my fourth). I agree, the Randall's geometry simply cuts better--I have a TGLB that has been reprofiled and given a clip point by the Custom Shop and it cuts like the Randall. My Hellrazor and SOB has been reprofiled a but at home, but the results are not quite the same.

Too bad about the rust on the infi--I live in the arid US southwest, so the different climate aids in the rust prevention. I sent my Model 5-6 back to Randall to have the proper end nut restored... the former owner had put a different one on there for some reason. Despite having lots of great blades to use while I wait, I miss that one. Once I get it back and hit the trial I'll post more pics and comparisons as well.

Congrats on the new addition to your family.

Anthony

Love these Randall #5-6. The leather handled one is an older second hand one, still in good shape, the guard has a square shape on the top diffrent from the newer model.

Very Nice! I just heard back from Randalls--they are going to fix-up the handle on mine. The nut turns out to be original, but it was messed with--so they are going to set everything up properly, sand and buff the parts that need it, and send it back my way... all for a modest charge. So now I'm looking to place an order for a #14... I was thinking of a single nickel guard and the border patrol handle /w lanyard hole. Also--if rust resistance/ prevention was NOT a concern, which steel would you go with--O1 or the 440b? I'm more concerned with 1. toughness, and 2. edge retention... what do your think gents? I've read everything out there on the web, and am still undecided.

Maybe you can share with us your usage pattern. I believe usage pattern drives the steel selection.

I will never do those crazy things we see in knife test videos so I believe any steel out of the Randall shop is good enough for me. Furthermore, they are battle proven in the field. I know how soldiers used their gears in the field as I was one of them. If it's good for them, it's good enough for me as a leisure hiker. Hence, my only consideration is the rust resistance.

I read reviews that 440B is harder to sharpen but I could get it razor sharp on my Sharpmaker fairly quickly on just the medium and fine stones. I did strop it after sharpening it. O1 must be even faster to sharpen but I can't prove this. My only O1 steel Randall is the large Sasquatch. It's my collector piece which I will never use or sharpen.
