The large, roundish object that weighs 200lbs and cost $120 delivered by Tractor Supply is called a protein tub. Our vet said, based on various expensive tests, that the reason several of our sheep had died was a protein deficiency. So the protein tub is supposed to supplement the evidently inadequate protein in the hay the sheep have been eating. Some of the ewes nibbled on it a little bit, but after several weeks, they had made only a modest dent in the contents. So I rolled the tub about 100 yards over to the ram pasture to see if they liked it any better. A couple rams took a tiny nibble and walked away. Upon inspection, I realized that the protein gunk had become--well, not quite as hard as a rock, but really hard. I tried to chip out some of the stuff with this Cold Steel 3V blade with the stupid name, but just splattered tiny pieces around. Joe X should give this a try.
Eventually, I found that a 5-lb hammer would make cracks around the edge and I could pry up pieces with a crowbar. I got tired of this after about 5 minutes.
