Tried my hand at whittling and using an Atlatl for the first time. The spears I made for it are far from ideal but it works, and I’m looking forward to improving my Atlatl skills.

In case anyone is unfamiliar with atlatls, they’re an ancient form of ranged weapon that pre-dates the bow & arrow by quite a bit. The first atlatls ever used date back to the Upper Paleolithic era.

They’re very versatile weapons. A skilled Atlatl user can hunt anything from a rabbit to a hog or deer.

And best of all, they can be simple to make. It’s a fun and very quick project for anyone with a knife. All-in-all, I spent about 30 minutes making the atlatl and two spears.

In case anyone here is interested in making one, here’s a short tutorial I found helpful.

What has become of me?

I used to cut stuff all day long at work on a shipping dock. I shipped freight all over the world, my knife was an essential tool, and I took pride in using it.

And now this-

I bought a box of cereal today. I always take the inner bag out of the box to make it easier to transport home on my bike. The inner bag had a lot of air in it and I couldn't close the flap on my tank bag. I've learned the hard way not to tear open bags of food, I prefer a "controlled cut". So I took out my Cold Steel Ti-Lite 4, and I cut a tiny slit in the top of the bag to let the air out. I use a knife so infrequently that when I did this today I thought of this thread and decided to document the momentous occasion.

My days of working that shipping dock are long over for me now. These days, about the most I use a knife for is perforating a bag of Frosted Flakes. :(

Ahh well, I guess any knife usage is better than none. I'll take what I can get.

K killgar Have you considered whittling / woodcarving?
I haven't done any of that since I was a kid.

I used to go camping a lot with friends and their families, and I developed this tradition of carving a totem pole out of a log, typically around 18" long and 3" in diameter. Then on the last night I'd stick it upright in the campfire and us kids would watch the flames rise up the pole one face at a time. Simple thrills for a simpler time. Man, I haven't thought about that in decades.

But wood carving was only something I ever did on campouts. I never really had the interest do do it at home. I've always admired the artistry of it though. It fascinated me as a kid. I remember I always enjoyed this old film we used to see in grade school of an Eskimo kid who carved a little Eskimo in a canoe and sent it on a journey down river. :)

opened a package the mailman delivered today. A new OWB holster, which will be put onto my ALICE belt/suspenders kit. Got it in OD Green so it all matches nicely too. I’ll have to get a pic when it’s all set up.

Now I’m honing the edge. It’s the first sharpening I’ve done since I bought this knife. Using my Gossman GST.
