I had a custom Sowbelly from my friend, knifemaker John Howser, but I parted ways with it.
But recently, I was gifted one,by another good friend I met from here on BF's.
It is inside this box.I was overwhelmed ,by this most generous & greatly appreciated by me,gift!

One of my best buddies and definitely my best knife buddy has every silver scipt Case Sowbelley they made, and he has willed them to me! I'm not banking on getting them even though he is 10 years older and not in the best of health! The one thing that makes him cringe is he knows I'll use at least some of them; for him they're all queen safes!

Those are some magnificent knives, and some great photos, too. I particularly like those waterfall shields. Anyone know why that particular shield became associated with sowbellies?

Interesting calling it a waterfall shield - I can see it. To me though they're a swimsuit pinup shield. This shield has been associated with the sowbelly pattern basically since the pattern began. While various companies that made the pattern had various shields they used, this shield was the most common across a number of manufacturers (not contract knives either) -- offhand, I don't think I've ever seen this shield on anything but a sowbelly on the old knives. As to *why* - beats me. It's even called the "sowbelly shield" by those who supply premade shields to knifemakers.

my old one that i never really used. but love to keep it. still factory bevel. razor sharp. just need to polish the sterling silver. some other angles to add on...

That is a beauty Jim!

Thanks Rob, it is a hard one to make, I understand. Only one blade comes close to touching. Others clear with no problems. It only touches if you push the wrong way after grabbing nick.

I only have one Sowbelly knife and its a true hand made one by my friend and fellow Okie knifemaker Gene Wiseman. I was kicking myself for missing this one when he offered it here because I knew it was 'my knife' from the moment I first saw it. As fate would have it, this knife did manage to find its way to me in the end when I found it on ebay for a buy it now and I brought it back to Oklahoma where its now found a permanent home. Its one of my favorite knives and coincidentally is in my pocket here this week. Actually, its been in my pocket since it arrived and is the only one to bump out my jack knife since buying it a few years back.

loving the case sowbellies...google searched for them but no dice. were they limited runs that are hard to come by? any info on where i may be able to find one? i've always loved the sowbelly design, but the blade shapes on the case ones (especially the stockmen ones with the clip, spey, and sheepsfoot) are really appealing. thanks!

His work looks very tight, looking forward to a front pocket from Gene.

They're just scarce because Case put the sowbelly pattern in the Vault several years ago -- they should be coming back out of the Vault later this year (if they follow the schedule used for their last group of Vaulted patterns). Some of those shown in the thread are limited releases of one kind or another, but the pattern in general was regular production. One reason the Case sowbelly is so appealing is that Tony Bose designed it.

thanks for the info zerogee. i'll keep an eye out. not really familiar with "the Vault". Is that something where Case temporarily retires certain production models/patterns until they make another run?
