I guess if you shot that moose in the eye, a .22 might do it. I'll just watch you do it from way back here, maybe behind this big tree, if that's okay with you.

:D

hollowdweller,
I too am interested in the "moose" that you would try to shoot with a .22. May I ask where you are shooting them and how long it takes for them to drop???

You shoot them right in the rectum and wait for a nasty lower GI infection to take over.

Takes a while to track them but they drop every time.:D

Here`s mine. Remington heavy barrel .223, and Ruger 10-22. ( and after posting the pic, I noticed a pair of size 12 "survival feet", never know, you might have to run them down if you are out of ammo)

Here's mine

RUGER001.jpg

Ruger 10/22 with Simmons 22mag scope, butler creek folding stock, SWR Warlock suppressor, Volquartsen hammer and sear, braided paracord sling, and a bolt locking device from a member over at silencertalk.com.

Absolute reliability, minute of squirrel accurate, and spooky quiet if you need it.

Nice I am a big fan of suppressors. I have a ruger mk II with a integrated dry baffel suppressor. It goes with me everywhere in my pack in the woods. A super versitile piece of kit if you ask me.

I picked up an AR-7 for a good deal a while ago. Neat, nice to have as an "extra" under a seat, but my slabside Ruger MKII is more accurate, even my short barrel 22/45. For the range, a .22 pistol seems to work the best for me, with a long gun for bigger creatures, both two and four legged.

Have an AAC Phoenix on a target MarkII also. They can be addictive. It shure is neat to be able to shoot for an hour or so knowing your neighbors didn't hear a thing.;)

I have the Charter Arms ar-7 as well. I hate it. It jams constantly, double taps and is very inaccurate. I'm sure it needs a complete overhaul, but I don't feel its worth the money.

I'm going to get a 10/22 and get the folding stock for it. I found a used one (10/22) for $180, but I think I can find one a bit cheaper.
I had an old Charter Arms Ar-7. It was very accurate.... with the right ammo. Try different brands and see what it likes.
Regarding jamming, stick to solids, mine would only feed LRN.
The thing with the ar-7 is you have to remember to check/retighten the barrel band/nut after firing every 2 or 3 magazines. The barrel band/nut can loosen with prolonged firing.
Factoring in the above issues it can be a good accurate lightweight trail/survival gun.
But yeah the Ruger 10/22 is a MUCH better gun (i had one of those too). Its just a lot heavier. But you can trick out Rugers to lighten them up quite a bit.

(FYI i sold off most of my guns to help pay tuition one year).

I really need to pick up a .22 again ,( Maybe a Henry levergun or Rossi Pump).
:)

Anybody try those new Winchester bolt action 22's?

HOLLOWDWELLER - "Always wanted one of those!!!!!"

H.D., I don't blame you! I bought that one when I was about 13 or 14 years old .... a loooooooong time ago, at a "country sale" where I grew up in North Arkansas. I paid $3.00 for it.

Actually, it is an extremely accurate little .22 rifle, and I have no idea how many tree squirrels, Cottonmouth water mocassins, snapping turtles, etc., Cottontail rabbits, and later, ground squirrels, I have killed with it over these many years.

Still shoots well.

For those who are skeptical about moose, well, there is an art to it, but it's an old family secret so I just can't reveal it! :)

AAAHHHHHHH....Ancient chinese secret huh......:D

I'll take it off your hands for what you paid for it, whattaya say? Hell, I'll double it.;)

SHOTGUNNER 11 - "I'll take it off your hands for what you paid for it, whattaya say? Hell, I'll double it."

Double it? Shotgunner 11, I can tell you are a square shooter indeed! But, I must decline. That old Stevens Favorite has sentimental value to me so I guess I'll just keep it. Beside, it is Hell, Death & Destruction on moose!

But I do certainly appreciate the generous offer! :D

Well, next time your hurtin' for cash just remember.

You know a guy who can make you half a dozen bucks richer.

Not sure if this counts as a "survival rifle", but it is what I used to carry when the occasion called for it. Nowadays, I sometimes take it to the range. Cheap old Tasco scope on it. Now that I wear bifocals, I kind of have to use a scope. If I try to use iron sites I can't see the frickin end of the rifle AND the target at the same time. Still shoots good. This setup is as good as I am.

Remington Nylon 66.

Nylon66.jpg

Ah..... nylon 66. I used to kill bunnies in Eastern Oregon with one of those. Great rifle!

IIRC that dude who poisoned himself and died in a bus in Alaska had early in his misadventure bagged a moose with a Nylon 66.

i don't have many guns.. i have lots of bows and knives.. so my survival (air)rifle is a GAMO shadow 1000...:D it's a great gun... i have had a lot of fun with it...

i also have a 20 gauge mossberg...i have had it since i was in 8th grade.. i have taken a lot of game with that thing... it's still kicking just fine..

COLT M4 Clone.

for 0-350 meters...for 350 to 2000 meters I use this as a survival rifle....

Seriously, the M4 clone and a .22LR kit riding in my pack, plus I also have a Charter Arms AR7 myself.
Somewhere I still have a Stevens Favorite...I'll have to look around for it now.
