Seriously, the M4 clone and a .22LR kit riding in my pack,

Which .22LR kit? I have a Ciener and it's been flawless; I need to pick up another one as well...mine has been very accurate in a 1/9" barrel plus I have a dedicated upper that's a turned-down old 1/12" barrel for my daughter.

Additionally I have a couple of 10/22's and some pistols. I've recently picked up Marlin Papoose and really like that for a compact rifle. The Ruger Charger is another very interesting design that would be a good choice...smaller than a full rifle, but still able to wring out some great accuracy; it's on my 2008 shopping list:D

I have a COLT kit, it's worked approx 97% of the time.

I'm very interested in that AR7. Where do you guys find the aftermarket accessories for it. Specifically the heavier barrel and fore end grips

The forend and scope mounts with iron sights were done by Dino of majestic arms. They specialize in after market barrels for Ruger 10/22s.

Is that a custom barrel as well? It looks longer and heavier than the standard one. That's quite a cool package.

Yes, I forgot to mention that it is also a custom barrel from majestic arms. I just got back from the range sighting it in along with my .308 M1 Garand and Marlin 45ACP Camp Carbine.

I was able to get roughly about 1" groups at 50yds using the 2.5X EER Leupold Scope shooting CCI Velocitors and CCI Stingers. Can probably do a bit better with some match ammo.

I don't own one, but I've been looking at the Kel-Tec SU-16 series lately. Not typically a fan of Kel-Tec's, but this one has been out for a few years and has proven fairly reliable and accurate. Weighs in at 4.7 lbs unloaded and folds down to 25.5". Make a good discrete carry pack gun.

Someone mentioned the Charter Arms explorer series. I believe there were a couple of variations and they were all bad. I grew up in a very bad part of town and knew a Iraqi guy that sold electronics. He was robbed and beaten up twice, so he bought the cheapest gun he could get, I believe they ran about $99 back then. When he was robbed again, he got off one shot, it jammed, and he was shot four times. The guy was too tough to die, and was back at work two weeks later - with a .357 revolver.

Christopher McCanless did indeed kill a moose with a Nylon 66 as noted in Krakauer's book and the movie Into the Wild.

Here is one of my favourites...Puma 92 saddle ring carbine in .38/.357 mag.

I shoot a lot of m14s but I really like this light, flat rifle. This is after a long weekend trip in the interior of BC. Next to my bag are a couple of topo maps of the area we'd been exploring.

I am confident that my handloads in .357 could put down a grizzly - I do have ten of them at the ready after all! But in general I would go after anything you'd use a 30/30 on, out to probably 125 m.

So you are in Canada?
I've been thinking about getting one of those pumas lately but can't find any Canadian distributors. Where'd you get yours? Locally or from a mailorder place?
SIR and Lebaron don't have them and i can't get them locally.
Mail order would be great.
I especially like the new stainless Puma .357 .
:)

Yup 357 Mag out of carbines or rifle are pretty darn potent. Load some 180-200gr WFN Hardcast bullets and you are good to go. The 92 is probably one of the strongest levergun actions for its size.

Well, I bought mine secondhand (but mint, three rounds fired) for $350, shipping in (I suspect it was a typo.)

But have you tried Frontier Taxidermy? They had them on their site last time I was looking.

I sure love mine!

What are some other lever action .357 rifles out there? I believe that Marlin has one, but any others that could be recommended?

Hands down for me, savage camper 22/20 cylinder bore on the shotgun. Birds to frogs. All around woodsbumming survial gun in my opinion. With this rifle I can get anything I want. Slugs, various shot buckshot to birdshot and 22 ammo that is easy to carry. Loosearrow

My "survival rifle" is meant for urban survival. It was chosen to be very compact and unobtrusive, easily portable, and to use the same magazines and ammo as my Glock 22.

Keltec Sub2000 in .40 S&W. It's not a battle rifle, it's just meant to give me a bit more reach than my sidearm.
