Skills Gathering, November 20 & 21st

HI Stomper -

I used to ride dirt bikes up there, and they used to allow camping on the "Pit" side of the facility.

The Range is $25 for a daily pass, and no FOID is required to use the ranges.

I will call them today and ask about a gathering scenario and post my findings here.

Hey Guys, sorry I haven't been posting much lately...

I think you guys are actually talking about two different places. mqqn's "buffalo" is a gun range with rifle, pistol, skeet/trap and shooting pit, Stomper's "buffalo" is a state park area.

The mqqn site is fun but would be better for an outing centering on shooting. I have been there several times and there can be some "kooks" to deal with. I am a little leary of returning after I was "waved" several times at the pit. Having an idiot with a glock handing it to his girlfriend who proceeds to point it at my chest and go "how does this thing work" kind of turns me off.

The buffalo that JK provided looks nice, never been, but may be a bit small in comparison to somewhere like Matthissen but who knows. If it isn't set in stone, his Channahon hideaway seemed pretty cool and I would vote for that. Don't mean to muddy the waters, just throwing some stuff out there.

I still have to confirm that I am available but will make every effort to be. I believe "Uncle Bill" would be as well.

The Channahon spot is nice, the I&M Canal on one side and the river on the other. The spot by the chimney is off the main trail, never seen anyone in that spot. Lots of wood lying around for fires and chopping, and fire pits and grills. Easy trail by the canal, and some very hilly ones through the woods.

Sounds like a winner - let's do Channahon on Nov 20.

Let's meet at some point that Stomper picks, since he knows the area.

I would like to meet fairly early - 9:00 too early?

We can do a little hiking, then stop and make some fires, and relax around the fire. I have never done it, but I would be willing to make up some bannock to roast over the fire(s).

All sound good?

9:00 too early...hah! :D I`ll already be up for 7 hours! I`ll figure out a place to meet, probably right where I-55 exits to Rte 6.

That works for me! Just be sure to let us all know for sure where off I-55, on Rte. 6 to meet up! Pick some place that is easy to find and easy to pull into. I'll probably be getting there at about 8:00!

Uncle Bill is in as well. I am putting together fishing kits for everyone and I am curious if you guys have any interest in learning some basic fishing techniques as far as knots, line and lure suggestions, etc. This would center around local freshwater species such as bass, panfish, cats, etc. I know mqqn does some fishing but I am not sure about you other guys and I wouldn't want to bore you. if you can't tie a palomar or rig a slip bobber, maybe there would be some worthwhile info.

Ice packs and splints are for amateurs, I am at the Life Flight level! :)

You'll have to forgive my noobiness. Im a lowly EMTI :(

ETA: Ill never be at the lifeflight level no matter what, I refuse to get on choppers or fixed wing aircraft. I only did that when I was forced...but no longer :D

Few can achieve my level of nunchuck badassatude!

Seriously though, it is too bad you can't join us as I had a blast at the last gathering that John held. Also, I wanted to ask if you would be willing to post a thread that would provide us with some of the knowledge that you would pass on if you could be there. Do I need Kerlix and Quik Clot for my "out in the bush, no doctor in sight kit? What would you consider to be essential first aid gear for a pocket dayhike kit? Are there any first aid items that we should always have available whenever we leave the house? That would be just awesome!

Sure, Ill do a little first aid write up about my hiking first aid kit and blowout kit. I pretty much only carry a standard first aid kit while hiking with condition specific items such as aspirin for heart problems, epipen for allergies, etc(I personally carry lots of gauze and ducttape, get some serious blister hotspots).

A blowout kit is for serious trauma such as gunshot wounds, stabbing, punctures, etc. I dont carry this with me all the time. I carry one in my truck full time, mainly for the shooting range lol.

Sorry for thread derailment John. :D

ETA: I didnt mean I carry stuff for heart problems and allergies, I dont have those problems lol. I just mean carry gear to your specific conditions you may have in addition to your first aid kit.

I would enjoy seeing your kits and any info you would add would be great. I carry duct tape in my pack, but not for first aid. I am learning already! :)

Hi Guys -

Ok - we can get together at 8:00 am @ exit 248 - head WEST on RT 6 and lets meet and the McDonalds/Gas station on the south side of Rt 6 just west of 55.

So - McDonalds, Exit 248 from I55, 8:00am Nov 20.

See you all there -

I will bring bannock for all of us to try - don't give me too many beers before we cook it....:o

best regards -

I would be interested in this.

Please do post your info on a kit, mine is just basic.
