Skills Gathering, November 20 & 21st

Oh John, I am interested. If I wasn't we wouldn't have gotten all fired up abou tit that morning. I'm in, just have to figure out what food to bring & what skills to look at... I already have plans for finishing up some tinder samples for everyone who shows up. They're a new possible product idea I'm thinking about posting in the exchanges. My mind's been reeling as of late, too much of a whirlwind between work & home stuff lately.

Great! Looking forward to your product idea. Bring anything that can be cooked over a fire.....marshmellos?

Glad to hear your back TheZenful1. I was starting to worry about you! Thought maybe you had gotten lost and couldn't find your way back here! Ha! Ha! Good to hear you will be coming out! I'll see you there.

Cool that you can make it Zenful! I am really getting excited about this! I just got done making up some small take home gifts for everyone that relate to my skills demo. Prep is one of my favorite things for any outing.

You`re making us all groin protectors to wear while you demonstrate your nun chuk skills?

You guys would need more than groin protection! I recently discovered that there are several OSHA rules and various laws of physics that may preclude the use of actual nunchucks. I am experimenting with bananas and nerf footballs for possible alternates.

Went out there again yesterday with a friend. The spot is perfect for what we want to do. Just driving out of the park we saw 6 deer. I`ll be bringing at least 3 new models that you guys will be the first to handle and use. The Camper, Sparkler, and the no name one. Really starting to get excited about this!

Howdy everybody! Yes John and I went out to the park yesterday for a bit and hiked back to the place where we will be occupying space on the 20th. It looks like the perfect place to do what we want. I think everyone will really like it there! We took all the back roads from John's house to the park, so I got the full dollars worth tour of the area. I think instead of meeting at the McDonald's there at I-55 and Hwy. 6, we should all just meet at the Park enterance. It's actually really easy to find. The park opens at 8:00, so we can just gather there until it opens if you get there early, and if you get there after the gate opens, we'll just meet in the farthest parking lot inside the park. You'll know your going the right way when you go down the wicked curvy hill. I figure most of you that live down in that area probably already know how to get there but, for you guys that might not know where it is. Just go to Google Maps and follow I-80 over until you get to the place where it meets with I-55, get onto I-55 south and take that down until you get to Hwy. 6, and take that west. Follow Hwy. 6 until you come to South McKinley Woods Road, and go south again. That will take you right into the park, which is McKinley Woods County Forest Preserve. Just print you off a map from google with the instructions and we'll see all of you there. We just figured that at that time of the morning on a Saturday morning, that McDonald's would probably be a mad house, so it might be a bit of a problem getting in there and back out on the road. I'll be looking forward to seeing all of you again.

As usual, I enjoyed my visit with John. He helped me adjust my new grinder so that I could profile some knives for myself. I am looking forward to being able to profile my Frontier Nessmuk some time fairly soon.

Hey John, the walking stick tip worked perfect! Later!

Tom, be sure to bring your curved knife with you. I would really like to try to do something like this.

Hi Stomper -

I read that one too - I would be up for trying to make a spoon - we will be sitting around a fire so we may as well give it a shot.

Does anyone know how to to a figure 4 trap? I will give that a shot here at home and see if I can get to where I could make one on the trail.

I read frontiertom's note, I will be at the park entrance a little beore 8:00 am.

I will bring the Knatchet and the Camp/Survival kit with me on this trip.

best regards -

As Tom said, it is easy to find. Just west on Rte. 6, go all the way through town, over the I&M Canal, over the Du Page river, and continue untill you get to McKinley Woods Road. Turn left, ignore the No Outlet sign, and drive right into the park. 465 acres of fun!

If you are coming from the I-55 direction, and traveling west on Hwy. 6, you want to turn Left on McKinley Woods Road, if your traveling from the west, and headed east on Hwy. 6, you will want to take a right on Mckinley Woods Road. And yes, ignore the NO OUTLET sign, you will be going through an upper class rural housing neighborhood, don't let that fool you! Just continue straight on Mckinley Woods Road and that will take you straight into the park.

I knew what you meant but, I figured I better clarify it for the others! Didn't want anyone to get lost!

Soooooooooooooo... Work has put the kabosh on me coming out the 20th. Some kind of huge basketball tournament, keeping th eplace clean & organized for the event, blah blah blah. *sighs*

But, I'll have the samples ready & dropped off to John for everyone to try out. I guess it'll be next time for me.

Sorry to hear that. I`m hoping if this one goes well, we might try to have one every couple of months.

That SUCKS! Stupid work messes up more important stuff all the time. Well, I guess there's always next time.

Bummer buddy!

Sometimes work just has to come first... :grumpy:

Thursday night (Nov 4) was my wifes birthday - I was to meet her and the grandkids at a local restaurant that we like.

I was literally standing up at my desk and getting ready to shut down my computer when I got an alert that a database was down....long story short, I was there until after 10pm, then had to go back in at 5:45 the next morning.

We'll take pictures for you, and we will most certainly have more opportunities for next year.
