Hi Guys -

Ok - we can get together at 8:00 am @ exit 248 - head WEST on RT 6 and lets meet and the McDonalds/Gas station on the south side of Rt 6 just west of 55.

So - McDonalds, Exit 248 from I55, 8:00am Nov 20.

See you all there -

I will bring bannock for all of us to try - don't give me too many beers before we cook it....:o

best regards -

mqqn

Perfect! I know right where that BP with the McDonalds is.

outdoorsfan - are you and Uncle Bill coming? If so, be sure to bring your firesteels! ;)

I am at least 90% sure, just need to check the swim schedule. Uncle Bill lives like 5 minutes from there and he is looking forward to it. I was planning on using my Kephart, so I will have a steel for sure!

Some info on McKinley Woods.

POW Camp

CHANNAHON -- If it weren't for the cement remains of old foundations scattered throughout the tranquil wooded hills of Channahon's McKinley Woods Forest Preserve, one would never suspect the intriguing past this land has known. About 60 years ago, before the 473 acres of pristine wilderness became the peaceful hikers haven it is now, McKinley Woods was the site of a World War II German P.O.W. camp for captured Nazis.

CCC Camp

In Illinois, there were nearly 50 camps, including large camps which had between 180 to 200 enrollees each. The type of general tasks varied with the type of park (i.e. soil conservation service, state park, county forest preserve, drainage camp, or army base), but was likely similar work, but just adjusted based on the size of the camp. The 6 camps working along the I&M Canal were devoted to construction – foot and vehicle bridges, horse bridges, shelters, buildings, benches, tables, along with water-control and landscaping. CCC constructions can still be seen in several state parks, including Starved Rock, Gebhard Woods, Illini and Channahon.

One of the firepits in the secluded area I was talking about. I called the park office and asked about using them, and was told that if there is a firepit, it can be used.

outdoorsfan, I have fished for a bunch of years but, you never know everything! I am always up for learning something new!

I am really looking forward to the Fieldtrip Gathering, it sounds like it is going to be another good one. I will see you all there on the 20th.

I hope somebody brings a knife!

Boy, there always has to be one in the crowd! Ha! Ha! :)

That spot looks great John! How far is this place from where we leave the vehicles?

I've got hotdog stickers, I'll bring them with me! Hotdogs, buns, chips, an onion? Anything else?:)

Sounds good! Connie and I just got back from there a few minutes ago. It`s drizzling here, and no one was there at all, we had the whole place to ourselves! We stopped at Subway and had a picnic in the shelter, then went on one of the shorter trail loops. It was so quiet walking in the wet leaves that we startled a couple of deer.

Not sure yet, I really need to get more hours in cause I'm getting broke. I was planning on working very early in the morning Saturday, then going to Utica/Ottawa later since it was so close, but that wouldn't work so well now. Trying to have my cake and eat it too. Maybe I'll work a day and a half or something the previous Sat, not sure yet.
