Skull Beads???

I tried lanyards AND skull beads lol. Quickly realized that I detested them both. I do love my laser-etched skulls on my Kershaw Emerson though :)
most lanyards are not but meer trinkets to show off. And just get in the way. even fewer serve a real function. I think keep the design on the knife. unless it's truly functional.

I'm sorry, but this thread is antagonistic and qualifies as trolling.
straitr
"Childish" is not being mature enough to recognize and respect individual preferences and opinions other than your own..

Sorry but he isn't being childish. Seem like your being over defencive here. You must like skulls a lot!
Childish is being incapable of understanding another's preference even with knowledge. And then still attacking them for their preference.

I like some skull rings...there's one weighing a full 3 ounces of silver that I like the looks of. :)
I don't know why, but I kind of like it.

I don't like lanyards at all though.
I don't use them on fixed blades, so why would I on a folder?
So, as I never use lanyards, I certainly won't be using a lanyard bead...although after this thread, if I ever do, I'll make sure to find a Hello Kitty one. :D

I do respect others preferences, that's why I started this thread.
If you respect others preferences you wouldn't be asking why others like something. The answer is obviously personal preference. Do I ask why you wear Crocs or a fanny pack? Nope. Why do you have your hair cut the way you do? Why did you chose the color of shirt you are wearing? Why is this even a conversation? I think it's child like to not understand that people have different styles.

I hope you think my avatar is child like.

In fact I think it's actually the opposite, when someone sees someone wearing a fanny pack (which I do) and they think it's dumb or geeky they smirk or laugh. Those who are genuinely interested as to why would ask. Like I have stated before maybe I'm missing something about skull beads. Asking in my case was about caring. Sorry if I came off the wrong way, not my intention.

Let me go at it from this angle. What do you expect people to say? What possible answers do you think people would give other than style? Do you think people have skulls to ward off vampires? This is absolutely trolling.

al g, let it go. He asked a question, answer it or ignore it. Do not discuss his motives, just address the topic.

Nope.

I think that these skull beads just add bling and eye appeal to our man-toys. There is a whole genre of bling - though we don't really admit it - from titanium scales to aftermarket clips to DIY acid washing and so forth. Its all about personalizing your knife and making it more fun to play with and use. It is a little strange to me that people gravitate to skulls rather than beads shaped like pineapples or hot chicks or a million other things, but it does add a certain flavor to a knife, and that's cool.

I like them but I wish there were other options that were readily available. I search a good bit for bead options for the lanyards I make,it is surprising and a little frustrating on how few choices there are at a good price.

I use a lanyard with a skull bead on my mini 47s flash light that I edc it makes it much easier to get it out of my pocket and you gotta have that bling.
on large chopper I don't use them much. but I hurt my wrist a while back and they really help if you use them right (no skull though).

I feel you pain. skull lanyards seem to be the only option unless you want to spend $15 or more on a plain looking titanium bead.

Seriously? Ask many motorcycle riders why flames and skulls have an appeal. Ask many combat vets why skulls and flames have appeal. This dude wouldn't walk up to an outlaw or HA or the black flag regiments and tell them that skulls and flames are childish, therefore he should keep quiet and realize that there are cultural symbols that he has no idea of and won't understand until he walks a different path. Me personally? It's a symbol giving warning. Many people have used skulls for that very reason. Generally it means "don't f**k with me" by those who display it. Some are more able to back it up than others. Military and police units and outlaws alike have used it for a long, long time and it almost always means the same thing: "Danger lies ahead. Be cautious and tread lightly. " I would think that a skull displayed on or alongside a knife would go hand in hand. I would also think that that would be fairly obvious and wouldn't need to be answered.

I guess I just haven't grown up yet, I've liked skulls since I was a kid.

This is my only skull beaded lanyard ATM,made by a fine craftsman here on the boards..willydigger.
It acts as a slide for my split tail lanyard & is made of the same tan micarta as the scales on the knife.
Bling,bling baby. ;)

No skull bead...or Hello Kitty bead :D

Whats wrong with hello kitty? I have a couple family members making a Hello Kitty pinata who is rocking pink camo and a flamethrower for the 4th of July :D. And the best part about this I am not kidding .

I am not into the whole knife bead thing, it's just one more thing for my knives to catch on and get ripped out of my pocket is how I see it.

How far back does their popularity go? I would guess that they come from military fashion, like "tactical" folders.

I'm not sure how far back the popularity of skull beads go but the use of the insignia has been around a very long time. I came across a Chapel in Poland constructed of skulls and bones. There is a very old order or fraternity called skull and bones which has been responsible for producing a lot of world leaders.

Seems as though we humans attribute something significant to them. It could be that they remind us of our own mortality and we find them strangely appealing. It's all very final or something.

This is not a bad thread after all Forrest G. I believe it's all very interesting and I know you meant no harm in starting it.

Skull and crossbones military history.

I don't personally understand the fascination with skull beads but to each his(her) own. I also can't fathom dropping a $100+ on a starlingear bead like some apparently do but then again I'm a) cheap b) don't like skulls.

I do have a few paracord lanyards on some of my knives. I like a paracord fob on a short handled knife to give a little something extra to hold onto like on my Boker Wharcom.

So they're saying "Watch your step, I'm a badass!"...sorry, but that sentiment makes me laugh.
In person or on the internet, that is just funny.

Yeah, nowadays. For centuries that's exactly what it meant and still does when poison or whatever is labeled with a skull and crossbones. It's because it's not healthy stuff. That's what a skull means to me and what it tries to portray. Like most things, it's been watered down to where it's just a stylistic impression without meaning in a fast food disposable culture. But I agree, someone who gets some skull with the intention of it in itself making that person a bad ass is laughable. It still does hold meaning for some people whether it's laughable to most or not.

I can agree with all of that. :)
