Skulls!?

I hate skulls. I see a lot of lanyards with skull beads. They detract from the knife, IMO. Just saw pics of skull-themed pocket clips, which prompted this mini-rant.

Just throwin' that out there. Not spewing lots of psycho-babble to over-analyze something that probably needs no analysis. But: Maybe someone can explain the popularity of the skull motif?

I don't like skulls as decoration either, they remind me of skateboards from the 1980s and IMO are trying too hard to look badass. But, if a knife is high quality I will by it in spite of a skull or two, for example the DPx Heat which is a great knife in spite of the skull on the pocket clip (which I have only succeeded in fading but not removing).

It pertains to more than just skulls in the knife world. Go ask a tattoo artist why skulls are so popular.

Most skull lanyard beads you will find, are skulls, because they are generic. There are other lanyard beads out there, which include: bullets, symbols, company logos, and even characters from movies/television.

Steel Flame is known for their eccentric jewelry and knife accessories, some of which I happen to like. What boggles my mind, is the amount of people that get upset about something so silly as a knife's aesthetics, that they feel compelled to tell everyone how much they dislike it. (That is more about the entire group of people, than your single post)

If you're looking for answers as to why people use a lanyard, then you asked the wrong question.

I'm sorry, but that is just ignorant. First off, the skull (Mr. DP) is one of DPx Gear's logos. Second, you can buy a sterile clip, if you don't like the logo.

I totally hear the skull hatred, though I'm somewhat torn.

On the whole I think that the skull = bada$$ idea is overdone. I think that skulls get thrown on something to try to up the cool factor and that often times it fails.

That being said, I love "doom metal" and hardcore punk and can totally respect the occasional presence of a skull as long as it's done right. I'm not a fan of the DPX skull, but there are some lanyard beads, particularly from Schmuckatelli, that are done well and pull off the motif well.

You don't like them. Others do. There's no analysis even involved.

I hate olives and I like turtles. So? Is there a discussion to be had about why some people like those horrid olives? Ptui. :barf:

I dont like olives or skulls lmao. Turtles are ok as long as they are the mutant ninja ones.

Haven't been a fan of the skull motif since about 8th grade. Honestly, the whole lanyard bead business model mystifies me more than a little as I'm not one to do much accessorizing. That said, they look to sell well and there's nothing wrong with pther people digging it.

Not sure, but we all have one.

Tell me you don't like this...

I hate skulls.
Here's a pic of some custom linen micarta that I've been sitting on for almost 2 years now; waiting for the right custom scale job.

This will allow folks to better focus their hatred of skulls.

I like skulls, just not necessarily on my knives... Haven't gotten a skull lanyard bead yet but now I'm inspired!

I don't get it at all, can't stand them, and wouldn't want a knife(bead or clip) with one if it were gave to me.

That's just my opinion though, and it shouldn't mean squat to others.
People like what they like, and that's a good thing IMO.
It would be a boring world if we all liked the exact same things.

A well done skull is one thing. Multiple skulls, too much. Sometimes, I think the skull theme is an exercise in "how can we charge more money with adding something cool to it?" Case in point:

KnifeArt wants $4000 for this. I think I'll pass.
