Skulls!?

I'm sure there are various reasons why people like/choose skull designs. Some just think skull designs are "cool", and some think wearing/displaying skulls make them a bad-ass.

Also, some people have a philosophical attitude towards skull designs and see them as a symbol of death, or more specifically, a symbol of human mortality and the inevitability of death.

And many cultures incorporate skulls in their various beliefs, customs, rituals, and celebrations.

I personally don't want any skulls on anything I own (clothes, motorcycles, knives, etc), not because I dislike skull designs, but because I like my stuff to be very plain. I won't even wear a hat or t-shirt if it has anything printed on it, no matter how small the printing is, or even if the item is free.

But still, sometimes I find a skull or similar design appealing.

I'm reminded of last Halloween. I was at Walmart doing some shopping and I passed a Halloween supply display. There was this grim reaper decoration. It looked like a really evil marionette puppet. It was really well designed with a lot of detail and had a flowing cloth robe. I was struck by it's "artistry", and it appealed a bit to my dark side. I came very close to buying it, I saw it and stopped to look at it on at least two separate trips to the store. But in the end I rationalized myself out of buying it. And I actually kind of regretted it.

I'm also reminded of this- A friend of mine developed cancer. He beat the cancer, and I mean he beat the cancer, by enduring a full course of chemotherapy. I like to think I'm tough, but watching him go through it I saw what "tough" really is. I don't think I could go through what he went through. After he was clear of the cancer, he got himself a tattoo with a skull in it. Now this guy isn't anything close to a wanna-be bad-ass, he's the most mellow guy you'd ever meet. And he's not into skulls. For him, the prominent skull in his tattoo had significant meaning to him- it was his way of saying, at least in the case of that cancer, that he had beaten death. And it was a symbol of the fact that he had confronted and accepted his own mortality.

So you never know why someone will choose to sport a skull design.

I say- to each their own, with no judgement from me.

I have since removed it for some reason I kept dropping it I blame the skull.

I was just kidding with you before, Rich. But I do now feel a bit better knowing there's no slipjoint out there with a skull fob on it :p:D

Believe me, not one single person is butthurt over what you like.
Not liking something doesn't equate being butthurt.

Its good that we all like different things

That skull is a part of their logo. The same for DPx Gear.

If you don't like skulls, then don't buy from a company that uses a skull in their logo...

Good advice. It's probably simpler for me to continue doing what I do, which is only buy things I like.

Guilty. But I'm not going to stop. Knife nerds know that "lanyard" often means "fob".

Only knife nerds who are incorrect. A lanyard is a cord or strap worn around the neck, shoulder, or wrist. If your doohickey with a skull on it cannot be placed around the neck, shoulder, wrist, or other body part...it aint a lanyard.

I can respect that. Might be similar thinking for combat vets. No doubt many others see it that way, too. Thanks!

(Note, I'm not trying to equate anything with chemo. I don't know what that's like, and don't want to.)

It wasn't meant to poke fun at something someone dislikes. It was meant to poke fun at the fact that there are people that complain that other people like something they dislike.

Indeed.

I have more respect for people that do what they like, than people who complain about what other people like.

Maybe I overlooked it, but I didn't see a single person complaining about other people liking something they dislike, and certainly saw no one "butthurt".
I saw voicing of opinions, but no complaining or butthurt at all.

If you were talking about the OP he even put "IMO" in his post.

And no, I'm not butthurt over the bad use of a meme, just my opinion:p

I'm going off topic for a second, but this is one of my pet peeves. Putting IMO or having to say In My Opinion has always bugged me, because it is often misused. Putting IMO in front of your opinion, doesn't not give you a free pass. It's like saying "No offense, but you're fat!"

Here's a pic of some custom linen micarta that I've been sitting on for almost 2 years now; waiting for the right custom scale job.

This will allow folks to better focus their hatred of skulls.

That would look good on a griptilian! Especially with the diamond eyes pattern!

I don't get the whole skulls thing at all: beads, clips, tattoos, scales, etc. Kinda reminds me of
a dentist decked out in leather on a Harley. I also don't get the cotton candy colors that folks are anodizing.

I guess it's my age. But to each their own:)

Don't really care for them either.

This one came with the skull and lanya... er fob already attached. Works well and for whatever reason I like it on there so it stays.

:emot-yarr:

I'm not into the skull beads; though I have seen a couple that I rather liked. Not enough to pay the price, mind you; but still.
I did, once upon a time, consider a tattoo with a skull in it - but didn't want to go big enough to make it look good

Very interesting... I was always looking at such terminology as semantics and never thought about it but now it make sense to me, thanks for bringing it up

I hate skulls. I see a lot of lanyards with skull beads. They detract from the knife, IMO. Just saw pics of skull-themed pocket clips, which prompted this mini-rant.

Just throwin' that out there. Not spewing lots of psycho-babble to over-analyze something that probably needs no analysis. But: Maybe someone can explain the popularity of the skull motif?
Since you hate skulls I assume you like hello kitty and butterfly beads for you pink edc knife.
