I got a POS 2.5 sledge from HF, horribly faced and slathered in black paint. Drilled out the old short oak handle that was only about 8" long. I had to do a lot of grinding to get this usable, followed by sandblasting to get the rest of the paint off. One face is now polished round, the other is flat-ish with a bevel. I made the octagonal handle from sugar maple and smacked in a birch wedge, then oiled the whole package and soaked the head. Oh, and the head is gun blued.

That handle is just beautiful, I hope that head proves to at least be halfway worthy of it.
Thanks guys I will report how it holds up. Agent_H I have a problem where I octagonalize everything I can. Love the way it feels in hand, but I really think helps especially with straight handles.
Edit: If it turns out to be real soft, maybe I'll have to try hardening it myself![]()
