Ok, all the above are correct for ID. But, does the secondary blades have BUCK stamped on their backside tangs ? 300

Lol the good thing is one of us is correct and the other will learn something so I'd say it's a win win! And I admit it's a good chance it will be me doing the learning.

True that. I've spent several evenings searching various threads here and elsewhere looking for anything related to the 300 Series. Copied & pasted dozens of pages of the database and many of 300's posts as well, but as far as the differences between the SC & CC versions are concerned it is hard to distinguish from the database. There are various post & pics from various users that point out the differences, but it can get pretty confusing. As always on most of those threads it was usually 300 who set the record straight. I've tried to keep up, but it's like studying physics sometimes, and my memory just isn't what it used to be.

Version 1 of Model 303 as built by Schrade will not have BUCK stamped on back of secondary blades, Version 2 will have BUCK clearly stamped on the back of both secondary blades. I will seek photos. 300

As stated the first two 303s were by Schrade, they had high sheepsfoot blades as you can see and the rivets were all the same size. Generally, the rivets in a version made by Camillus are ground flat and with Versions 1 and 2 by Schrade they are round topped. 300

Back of tang on both secondary blades have no markings at all.

Pardon my malfunction. I'll correct this later. I shouldn't post from my phone...

That's OK my Photobucket account is so slow and hacked up I have pulled my hair out and now have to wear a hat to keep from getting frostbite by recent weather..300

Don't ya just hate Photobucket? Slow and spam everywhere. There must be a better place to upload photos.

No boxed ears, I will be wrong in future also, it is how we learn. Always check for clip blade swedge and/or Buck on secondary blade backs. After that we can debate the rivet heads. Remember those knives were hand assembled back in the late 60's and early 70's when hand assembly ment they assembled and polished the rivets as they saw fit. Some days more and some days less.........one of the reasons lot of companies quit using rivets. On modern 300 rivets are put on and spread from the inside liner before assembly. The most uncommon common mistake is a high head.... 300

Here is a 301 with the secondary blades stamped "BUCK", but if you look you might notice a slight problem.

Thanks guys. So much knowledge around here and all shared freely...great place to hang out!

I thought the secondary's were always stamped on the pile ( reverse) side?

Never say never and never say always, and don't ask me how this happened. Sometimes it's fun to have an oddball.

Point taken. And yes I enjoy the odd ball. I'm looking at one right now, nothing as neat as that but odd. I have what maybe an odd ball incoming, it's an 86' BUCK shield 303 with the crooked shield of the 85' guessing scales left over from previous run?

I'll try this again....

I look for the 2 easier signs first; visible pivot pins = Camillus and large spey blade = Schrade (top).

Beyond that, there are other things not mentioned that are true in all of my examples.

Top is a Schrade and bottom is similar configuration Camillus.

All of my Shcrade 303s have less hump or belly on the handle (top in photo).

Also, I don't know if it's true in all cases, but all of my Schrade 303s have stainless springs where all of my Camillus and early Buck 303s have carbon steel springs.
Again, Schrade on top.

Another difference I found in my examples is the spacer in the blade channel. Notice the difference in shape between the Schrade (top) and Camillus.

Finally, Schrade's pivot pins were hidden behind the bolsters so their bolsters were more consistent in thickness and thicker than the Camillus and Buck 303s.

I don't want to be a source for wrong information, so if you guys know otherwise in my points, let me know.

By the way... who has been overpaying for the 303s on the bay lately?

Great info. I love learning about these knives. I had a feeling you would have a couple of examples! Thank you for sharing once again.

Thank you once again for answering our questions. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

I'll check my pile Clay, I may have an extra '88 "BUCK" 303. Give me a couple of days to rummage through the mess.
