Slippies made in Japan???

Some of the best production knives on the planet are made in Seki City. I have a beautiful Moki lockback in my hands right now as I type this. Polished blade, bone stag scales, very smooth action. A thing of beauty.

Yes, the Japanese outsource just like Americans do. But I don't think the Japanese would mark a Chinese made knife as made in Japan. It wouldn't be in their nature to do that. I don't know where Russell sources his knives but I'm willing to bet the ones that say they are made in Seki City are indeed made there just like my Moki.

All I can tell you is that I have delt with the same tradeing company for over 25 years and they know that if they ship me mis-marked knives they will lose my business.

Anyone watching my site or catalogs knows that I buy knives all over the world, including Taiwan and China. When we buy other brands made in China Goldie requires that China be perminatly marked with laser or stamp not just printed or rubber stamp.

i personally have several knives in my hands now. they are marked made in japan but they are made 7 miles down the road from where i am now in china.

A company asked me at the shot show this year to produce knives for them. i will not name names. but they told me in great detail on how to produce the knvies with china on them. where it is to be located on the knife and how easy to remove it.

it is not one company doing it. its a few.

I have the most respect for AG Russell.

I am on the front lines of knife making in china. Please do not try to tell me what I see or don't see with my own eyes.

I will say I have not saw any knives with AG Russell anywhere here.

i want to restate that in no case have i saw any knives made with the name AG Russell. i want to state again that i have the highest regard for AG Russell.

i do not mean or even allude that AG Russell has any knives made in china.

but there are others and not just one.

my apologies to AG Russell if anything was said that is harmful to you. Your name and reputation it is without question.

Some of the finest knives that I have ever had made are marked China. And the word cannot be removed without ruining the knife.

I'd be interested to know which ones you are referring to.

If this is too far off topic for this thread I'll start another one.

Thanks!

They are identified both in the catalogs and on the web site. The first was the Beak, the large lockback hawkbill, the second was the lockback Gunstock the first 1,000 were made as the 2008 Texas Ranger.

When I toured the factorys in Seki in the early 1980s I saw thousands of blades marked "Solingen" so this kind of fraud has been going on for a long time.

We make knives, when we can afford to, in the U.S., Germany, Italy, Japan, Taiwan, and in China. They are all marked with the country of origin. Those marks cannot be taken off without a grinder.

china has the skill to make good knives but the public at large does not think the 'made in china' mark is good and for the most part it is not. We all see flea market junk and walmart junk.

however now Germans are here, the Japanese are here, Taiwanese are here and American's also.

if you stand over them and make them do the work your way you can get quality knives.

however china is like a cat not like a dog. if you teach a dog to not get on the sofa when you are there or not there he will listen and obey. now the same with a cat. when teach a cat not to the get on the sofa and you are there the cat will not but when you go away the cat will get on the sofa.

china is the same for the most part there is no black and white to this.

if you watch them work they will do a good job but go eat lunch or go back to the USA. you will get a cat on your sofa.

I want to publicly apologize to Mr. AG Russell for sidetracking this thread. I read a little to start and replied with totally honesty. I should have read deeper and kept to the thread lines. I made a mistake and Mr AG Russell has done nothing wrong.

Please accept my sincere apologies.

Thanks....I've seen nothing but positive comments about those two knives. I'm surprised you didn't mention the Ron Lake tail-lock I saw in your current catalog. Considering the price difference between the two you mentioned and the Lake, I would have thought the Lake would be on top of the list.

that is a really lovely knife, but, it is not my design, it is Ron's he is responsible for the quality, not me that is why I did not even think of them.

Thank you, there is no need to tell me that you are sorry, I have not been offended.

I find that you can buy all of the quality you want, IF YOU ARE WILLING TO PAY FOR IT. In the more than 40 years I have been doing this it is not uncommon to find myself paying more money than a company has ever charged before for a knife.

What kind of knives do you make? web-site?

we made knives and swords with tamahagane that we smelt our selves.

alll is hand made hand heated hand ground on japanese water stones.

we only use belt grinders on the wood handles.

the web site is still under construction but you can see something there:
