I believe if the dealer was willing to replace the knife in the first place the turnaround time from shipping it back to the dealer and getting a new one would have been quicker than the initial shipping to Spyderco for maintenance. Let the dealer work out the kinks, they have the resources and time. Could have had an awesome knife a week after the initial purchase.
I also agree that everyone has different opinions and expectations of certain price points in knives. My co-workers believe $40 will buy an indestructible knife with pure perfection. My Manix 2 for example got all of the Oos and Ahhs but when they heard the price tag (which was "cheap" to me) they said no way, they'd never pay more than $50 for it. It depends on the person, collector, user, etc...Honestly the first pics of the handle scales wouldn't have bothered me too much as long as lockup was solid and felt good in the hand.
