Small compact knife for short hikes.

I was thinking about my CRKT Hammond ABC. It is a narrow 4" tanto fixed blade. It is compact and comfortable to carry. I usually end up with this when I leave the house for a short hike. I have a Kydex IWB on the way from Normark, which will make it a great package for self defense.

I recently bought a RD-4 which is awesome but I wouldn't take it for a short hike. It weighs about a pound. However, for longer hikes I would take it.

The ABC can do a lot. I have batoned with it. Made some figure four traps and done some firemaking. It is well designed and tough made from AUS-8 with .1875 thickness.

Does anyone have a smaller knife they carry for short hikes.

With Normark pants, it rides tight and high and you barely notice it's there:

Busse AD, Fallkniven F1...for just taking a stroll through the woods.

i have quite a few smaller fixed blades, but some of my favorites are: BRKT mikro and mini canadian, PSK, mini-northstar, becker necker, gossman PSK and a rick lowe EDC knife....:D

Yep I sometimes bring a sub 4" blade on quick hikes. My Carter necker really fits the bill. It's super slim and light, but razor sharp and tough as a nail.

Buck Alpha Dorado - 2-1/2" blade. Robust enough to carve trap parts and friction fire boards and drills yet small enough it wouldn't upset my Aunt Minnie. I used to rely on my Benchmade AFCK but the size is off putting for the sheeple, also I don't find it to be that good a bush knife. (bought it on the basis of a test report in American Survival Guide - bad choice).

I really like this Dorado, in fact, so much that I bought another (first one in 420HC, second in 154CM)

Mora 510. Weighs nothing, feels great in the hand, sheath has a nice positive 'snap' and can be worn as a dangler or neck knife. Under 4" and gets more than sharp enough. Oh, it also costs $10.

I rotate between Mora 780, SOG seal pup, gerber gator, LM wave, and Camper SAK (this always goes with me no matter what knife I have). Mostly the mora though. I need to seriously get out and hike now thanks. :)

+1 Bark River Mini Canadian. It "acts" like a larger knife but is small enough for pocket carry. Mine is a regular edc in a pocket sheath.

I use for day hikes now a CRKT Ultima with a survival kit inside. I used to carry a Seal Pup, but I like the Veff serrations on the CRKT a lot better. CrKT Hammond is a good choice. I have also taken a CRKT first strike on my two last hikes. Great knives. Both of them are a little over four inches.

I rather like those Ranger Shiv's, price isn't bad either. Did you both have to handle them yourselves, or did Justin add them on for you?

4'' opinel, the only folder i've ever liked. Weighs next to nothing, razor sharp, hardly notice it in your pocket.

I want a swamp warden but they are always sold at.

That shiv loks like a Really good choice, On my last couple of hikes and campouts I have been using a Spyderco Manix.

Same as always.
