I been carrying a dragonfly for years with a larger knife or just the df. Sometimes with a cadet and the df. but its not challenge, the df can handle anything and it does it better than lost of my larger knives.

Not much of a challenge for me. I regularly carry knives smaller than 3 inches in blade (or overall even) length. I live in the city and play in the sticks and I've gotten by for months at a time with a SAK Classic or a Leatherman Squirt. The SAK I'm currently carrying has a blade under 2.5 inches and did everything I needed as a boyscout and still does a fine job today. I regularly carry a framelock Spyderco with a 1.x inch blade.

As pointed out, for most people and for most things something so simple as a SAK Classic is plenty, and it has scissors!

You have touched on the ugly truth that is the gorilla in the room. The fact is, we on this forum and forums like it are knife nuts. We are afflicted with an obsession with knives that is not shared by most of the rest of the populace. In fact, the truth is, most people these days don't even carry a knife at all. Millions upon millions of people get by in life with no knife on them at all. They use a house key to saw open the tape holding box shut, or use something else. A small cheap box cutter will cut open boxes, open mail, cut a string, and more.

But…we the afflicted and obsessed, would never do that. We have to have not only a knife, but one that is a point of pride and status among our fellows. We have to have the bet wonder steel of the month, the fastest opening if some Chinese paratroopers or zombies need to be killed. We watch each months knife magazine to see what new hyped knife is the "One" .

The truth is, millions of people live their life with no knife or just a Victorinox classic on a keychain, because they don't care. They are not obsessed like us. That the humble little Victorinox keychain SAK is the the worlds best selling pocket knife, must mean something. It was only when I got older that I saw Jeff Randall was right, that 98% of the knife market is BS.

I've got by very well for days at a time with just these two;

The little Remington/Camillus peanut served me steady as my edc pocket knife for a few years.

I pretty much agree, for the most part.

When I first left home and moved to Taiwan on my own for several years, my only knife was a Victorinox Spartan SAK. Although prior to that I was really into knives, by that time my focus of importance was on other things. That one knife did just fine for over 10 years. I never felt under-knifed because it didn't have then-non-existent S110V super-steel. My I nterest in knives was reignited again in the late '90s, a few years after I got back Stateside. To this day, a Victorinox Executive and Pioneer are in my pocket every day.

That said, I also usually carry a large CRK Insingo. Not because of any 'status' it might give me...I never have reason to show or discuss it with others in my life. I carry and use it because I enjoy doing so. There need be no other reason. It doesn't have the 'latest-greatest super-steel' or locking mechanism, but it's also not a Victorinox Classic, or a Case or Camillus peanut, either.

Some people like fancy cars. I like my Camry. Some like high-end watches. I'm happy with my Timex. Others must have all the latest-greatest features on a smart phone. I still get by with a flip phone that I bought new 12 years ago. I know I'll eventually have to upgrade to an iPhone when this one stops working. But I get a degree of joy by using my CRK, and I do not feel ashamed about it because I could get by with less.

Another reason I carry it is because I CAN. IMO, life is too short to fuss or argue over what type of knife someone else 'doesn't need' to carry, or to limit myself to the bare minimum if I don't choose to, or don't have to. I don't feel unworthy of carrying something for the sheer personal joy, satisfaction and appreciation I get out of it. I respect if someone else chooses to carry only high-end knives, mega-folders, small pocketknives, cheap utility knives, or no knives at all.

Today I carried an Walden 108OT The smallest Stockman they made as far I know. Cut loose thread, opened mail, cut some pickles into smaller pieces and it did what I needed .

Sorry if I stirred up a hornets nest , I just wanted to have some fun with the under 3 inch overall long knifes that I have.

No hornet's nest for me :). If I traveled anywhere by plane today (say, to Europe, for instance), the only knife I might pack in my checked luggage would be a Vic Classic. It would handle pretty much anything that might come up for me on vacation, is as unobtrusive as a pocketknife can be, and is easy enough to replace if somehow lost.

I almost forgot, back in early 2K, there were a few times when the only knife I carried (besides my Vic Executive) was a Spyderco Ladybug that I used to keep on my keyring.

I don't even consider a 3" to be particularly small - every EDC I've carried for the past 40 years has been 2½" or less. It was a small Buck or Old Timer stockman, or Spyderco Dragonfly, for most of that time; now it mostly alternates between a Spyderco Dice and a small Alan Davis custom fixed blade, with an occasional small traditional thrown in for flavor.

I used to carry a 4" Benchmade CQC-7, but that was for self-defense, and I stopped carrying tacticals years ago.

No challenge for me. Today, and for the past couple of weeks, I have been carrying a yellow Case peanut, plus a couple of bigger knives, a SAK Recruit and an Okapi Biltong. Neither of the big knives has a blade over 3". I could do without any two.

A week or so ago, the peanut made it through the metal detector at Target field. That is reason enough to carry it right there.

I get harassed for pointing that out. Good post.

Sorry i had to trim out the filler.

Carrying this little guy today. I really wish Kershaw would bring them back with a higher end variant. Even if it's just g10 and sandvik steel.

Kershaw 1770 OD-2. Funky little Lee Williams cam driven flipper.

Thinner behind the edge would be nice too. That colossal bevel is at 19dps. I fear 15dps or less would have resulted in a bevel half the height of the blade.

I don't currently have any all mine broke or were lost so I have some small options on my wants list but I have always believe in quality tools to do the job and SAK is a quality knife. I will say my general preference for a knife is in the 3-4" range but still I love these tools so I love collecting a variety of them. When I get enough small knives to do a rotate-able daily carry I might give myself this little test sounds fun and simple.

In honor of Wowbagger, I'm going to carry these two for a while. The little SAK classic and a razor blade box cutter for the shite jobs.

I completed your challenge a while back. For about 10 months I carried nothing but a Case Peanut in my pocket and a SAK Mini Champ on my keyring.

Most carried knives over the years were a LM Juice, and later a Gerber Curve (about 10 years in a row for each; Juice going on 20 years if you include my travel knife/tool). Today, I carry a longer blade because of those rare occasions I have to put more force for a larger job. Even then, my LM Crater (2.6") will do almost every job I would use my larger knives for (outside of the kitchen).
