Small Stoves?

This is an excellent thread!!!

A big thanks to Guyon for starting it

And thanks to all that have added to it. ... Very

Another thumbs up for the MSR Pocket Rocket. It's damn hard to find a reason not to throw it in the pack. Light, hot, simple and packs in a handy cup. The bigger MSR's are hard to beat for melting snow, etc. Dragonfly for me.

PS - the Pocket Rocket also runs on most canister fuels so you can probably get by with whatever you come across.

Anybody have any experience with or pics of the Svea123?

Kinda old school but have read goods things about them, Colin Fletcher was a big fan. I've been on the edge of buying one, so any input from the hogs would be helpful. Thanks much.

These alcohol mini stoves are sweet!

I pimped my SuperCat.

Here's the cookpot with SC inside.

The SC apart.

SC assembled.

The SC filled with 1 oz. of denatured alcohol.

The SC being primed. I found it best to let the alcohol just come to a boil. This produces vapors which force the burning fuel out the side jets. (See two subsequent pics as well.) Otherwise, the stove just never really gets cookin'. Priming time was about a minute.

Boil at 5 minutes.

Still cooking at 8 minutes.

Total burn time was 9 minutes on 1 oz. of alcohol (not including the 1 minute of priming). The stove will hold 1.5 oz., so I'm curious as to how long the extra half ounce will up burn time.

Okay, I tried a max run.

1.5 oz. puts the fuel right at the lip of the holes, so that's max capacity.

With the lid on, I had a hard boil at 4.5 minutes.

Total burn time was 12.5 minutes + the 1 minute of priming time.

Tested the Brasslite tonight.

With 2 oz. of denatured alcohol, burn time was about 18 minutes. I think it will hold a little more fuel and burn a little longer.

I ran it on simmer (air ports closed) for about a minute, and this setting did noticeably reduce the flame.

You should try a SuperCat. It cost less than a dollar and took about 30 minutes to make.

Thanks! I picked up some materials tonight for several types of alcohol stove on zenstoves.com. Besides the Titanium Triad and Esbit I just received, I am going to be stove rich once I have the time to make them up.

When I go camping with HOGs like Skunk, Cobalt, RonyBear and PorkDucci..... we just bring this with us:thumbup:

That is a very cool site.

Jeepnut22, I picked up a combo as well. Guess I'll see what I think of the cannister stoves.

Update:

Got the MSR combo in today and gave it a test.

I must admit that the Pocket Rocket does a good job of heating/boiling water rapidly.

I tested out the MSR Titan Kettle with 2 cups of cold water.

This little sucker puts out the BTUs (8200).

In a warm kitchen, it already had water beginning to boil at about 2.5 minutes.

PocketRocket2.jpg

Just after 3 minutes, I had a rolling boil going.

I'm still not sold on the disposable cannisters. Seems like they ought to have some way to recycle these things, just like propane tanks.

Still, a lightweight and reliable way to get water hot fast. And a great deal at REI-Outlet right now for the stove and titanium pot.
