Smaller K2? Lil' K2?

Interesting. How about when mine gets dull I'll send it to you and you can compare? Fair warning, it might be a while... ;)

No problem, I know I've sharpened a Big Chris fixed in 10v that was rather thin but still very wear resistant. It felt slightly softer than the Spyderco but not by much. I hear ya on the "it might be a while" mine rarely sees more than stropping and it's typically weeks before it needs to go to the stones. Even when I go to the stones its more to "refresh" the edge than anything.

I was also able to find out just how tough this steel is. I was a little concerned about toughness because of its hardness and high alloy content but that all came to rest when I slammed the edge into a box staple. I was breaking down boxes and swinging through a 10in wide strip like a ninja with a sword when on one of the swings the knife came to a sudden stop. Thinking it was just the cardboard binding I did it again at which time I felt a very metallic contact. I was expecting to look down and find major denting and possibly chipping but all I found was this.

Looking down on the edge apex you can see the roll in the edge. IMO, very impressive for the amount of force I was using. Just rolling, no chipping.

Just ran across this thread. This is one of the reasons that Spyderco fans and customers are so blessed. How often do you have the owner/founder of a company and the product designer both responding to a product forum? I would say not often. Then they actually bring a product to market based on the conversation in that thread. Amazing. Thanks Sal for all you do.

I love my big K2, it is very unique in the knife world. It is light for its size and actually quite pocketable. That being said, I would also buy a smaller version if only so the original can have a little brother.

I started an identical thread to this one in the Spyderco forum and in that thread Sal said that this project is currently on hold. I don't know anything else. Hopefully Sal will chime in soon.

This exactly. Also, definitely in for one!

Great news. Looking forward to this one!

Actually,
I thought i read somewhere, where Sal mentioned this knife was "on hold" & it was a more recent post than his post above: "moving forward with mini K2".

I hope it is in the pipeline.:)

Sal's comment that they're moving forward was back on Jan 4. See BFK's link (above) to the thread on the Spyderco Forum. On August 25 Sal says the project is on hold.

Thanks. Didn't read through the threads a 2nd time. That's unfortunate. Maybe we'll see an in-house 10v Ti folder.

I think I saw info that in Amsterdam meet there was Farid's smaller K2 prototype. Can someone who were there say something about it. Should be a fantastic blade if released!

does spyderco make any other blades in 10V? if not please just make any of the blades in 10V for any model.

I recently got a brand spanking new Spydie Farid K2 as a vendor dumped the price on remaining stock.

Its a great knife and Ive wanted one for a long time.

Id buy a smaller version as well in a NY minute.

The Slyz is also a fantastic knife but a smaller K2 might be (even) more to my (current) taste
(liking Spydercos is a permanent state but my taste in certain blade shapes does change on occasion ;-) ).

VERY much look forward to seeing the progress on the smaller K2.

Just got K2 mini custom. And that's how it looks like to Spyderco's K2

I'm very interested in the mini custom. I see them at knife center. You didn't get the full flat grind version, and it's tip-up carry, correct? How are you liking it? Where did you go to get it?

I like it very much. Its a little bit wider because blade is tchicker. And it has lock stick also as Spyderco's K2 😆 Anyway Spyderco should do smaller version.

It seems hard to justify producing this when the Slysz Bowie is a very similar handle shape, not a drastically different blade shape, and selling well. It seems much more likely to produce a Sprint run SB instead. Clearly not the same knives but similar enough in a scaled down version that it just doesn't seem likely. Outside of blade material, what significant difference is there from a scaled down K2 vs a SB?

The K2 is an entirely open construction with a single stand-off type structure. SB had a backspacer that covers a significant portion of the handle. Arguably the K2 has a more conventional bowie shape to the blade than the SB. But I see your point - when you shrink the K2 do we not have another SB?
