Smoother than Chris Reeves?

Umnumzaan.

Had a client send me one about a week ago and let me tell you it was hard shipping this guy back!

Are you sure? I always thought the Ball flipper was on PB washers. Mine actually isn’t that smooth and has a lousy flipping action due to the axis bar making a bad detent for a flipper action.

The other Benchmade Ball folder, the Precinct.

Yup my butch had bearings and was glass smooth like every bearing folder I've had even my cheapo CRKT fossil was super smooth. Bushings can never be as smooth as bearings, too much surface area to create friction and wear regardless of lubricant, this is why bushings are rarely used in motors, wheels etc. That said I still love my Dpx hest with bushings but I wish it had bearings.

CRK: Smooth and solid like shutting the door on an old Mercedes.

Spyderco/BM: Smooth and not so solid like shutting the door on a new Kia.

The Kia takes less effort but is decidedly less satisfying and reassuring than the old MB.

That was a really good example.

But I am surprised nobody mentioned the pivot bushing assembly on the Sebenza. The exactness and tolerances make it have that quality feel that goes beyond just the word "smooth". It is an appreciating of the tight tolerances that surpass other knives.

The only other maker that uses the tight tolerances of the Sebenza pivot bushing system is Greyman knives. Please correct me if I am wrong or are there other makers that do use the same pivot bushing assembly with those close tolerances?

Shirogorov have the same tolerances but the OP doesn’t want flippers so I didn’t bring them up

You’re question is not only hard but I believe it may be a giant can of worms as everyone’s definition of “smooth” will/should differ from the next guy/girl now..

To answer your question and obviously this is my opinion, my PM2 is super “smooth” especially after I polished the bushings and applied some nano oil..but I’d say for a fraction of the price if you’re looking for the same appreciation you get when you open a CRK I’d have to steer you in the direction of the Gayle Bradley2. Sure you can flick the thing open like a mad man but believe it or not I find myself taking my time with this particular knife possibly due to its size and simply enjoying the nuisances of it locking up in my hand. Though I could be doing this subconsciously as I put some sweet Iron Burl on my GB2 to make it seem “traditional”

Whoah...!! That’s incredibly good looking.

Sorry if this is off topic, but what makes a knife a "flipper" as this conversation is pertaining to knives that flip open smoothly yet are not called flippers. Would my zt0450 be classified as a flipper? Thats the smoothest knife i habe and it beats out my benchmade 940 hands down for smoothe open and closing, the action is just fantastic. Although ive never felt anything on the high end scale, in comparison to some spydercos and other less expensive knives the 0450 is by far my favorite action, but again. I dont know if it qualifies as a flipper or not.

I believe Michael Raymond knives have bushing pivot.

PM2 also has a kind of busing pivot though the tolerance is not as small as for Sebenza.

Thank you sir!
I never knew they were the same tolerances.Where did you get that info?

Didn’t bother to even validate this I just know their tolerances are that way above common production knives, not to mention everyone says they are the flipper of the CRK world. I enjoy my Hati and must say it’s buttery smooth not to mention goes back perfectly centered like a CRK. So I’d say they have pretty tight tolerances.

So not the same. Gotcha. Both great knives though :)

Sorry, but I think the correct term I needed to use was the Sebenzas "Barrell" type pivot bushing system. The Sebenzas and Greymans use them.

I took apart numerous sebenzas and then 3 different greymans. Greymans are so tight you can mess up and pinch a washer if you don't know what you are doing. They are a small mom and pop operation and darn they are good. Great customer service as well as you will talk direct to the owner and they are a great couple to buy knives from. Hope they stay small!
