if you want to do a cord wrap that works on a machete -- start by thickening the handle a little with paint sticks or flat pieces of leather.
for that matter, you can make a pretty comfy handle out of old belt sections glued up then shaped with a rasp or 4 in 1 file.

How do you finish a handle like that to keep it nice?

Would some old lumber work? I think my uncle has some from granddad's old homeplace.

I sharpened and used the Plumb Cruiser today. It'll pop hairs off my arm. I think it's pretty sexy lookin'...

Well, it's been a while since I started a coal forge build and posted it (about 3 years I think) but things have finally slowed to the point I can finish it. Since I promised to post pics back then, here you go. It's about 85% done, just have to add some tong racks and come up a couple inches with some sheet metal on the sides. First fire this weekend.

Made a pull-out rack for long stock.

And here's the tuyere arrangement with clinker breaker and ash dump.

I agree, that is one sexy axe. Very, very nice. Motivates me to show off a few of mine, though its doubtful they have the same appeal...

That is fantastic! I have been wanting to build a forge forever but I do not have the space quite yet and the neighbors would quickly come to hate me... Looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

for a cord wrap I'd go with an epoxy soak.
for leather, I melt in as much sno-seal as the leather will hold, then buff with a chunk of flannel or an old sock.

yeas - old lumber works great -- the handles on my BK9 were made out of bamboo flooring, I've also used othr wood scraps for handle scales, glued them on with epoxy, and finished them with danish oil or paste wax.

*EXHALE* Thank goodness you finally posted. I was getting tired of holding my breath after all that time. ;)

Good looking work. Can't wait to see it being used.

Later today, she gets fire.

First project is a nice big pot rack for my son's new home.

I'll probably try my hand at making some scales out of lumber then. Thanks for the info.

Yesterday was nice to me. NCSlice sold me a BK5 (been wanting one for a while) and won an instagram giveaway for $250 worth of AMSOIL products.
