For those of you that are interested in the axes.. It's a bit too much now to copy/paste here, but I've been posting some more pictures and asking more question over on the axe forum. The Jersey Sager Chemical Axe that I figured was the least valuable/collectible turns out to be a very rare one. I'm pretty happy over them.

Here's a link.

Martindale is a British machete company, similar to Ontario or Imacasa in quality.
they were military contract holders from pr-WWII through present and have a reputation for fairly soft blades in my experience.

Speaking of which.. I need some advice on making handles from y'all who have done it. The Martindale needs new handles in a bad way and I've got very limited equipment to make them with. I was thinking about a paracord wrap but I don't think that would look/work well.

Those axes are looking nicer and nicer Nos. looks like quite a few still have some life left in them. Have fun restoring those.

That was weird, I had to reset my password when I tried to log in on the new forum. C'est la vie. I'm back, still blue though but that may change depending on how this works now.

Nos those are some sweet old axes. The one that is beyond repair because it's too rusted, have you thought about getting it bead blasted? It should clean it up pretty nicely.

Thanks. I'm enjoying it so far. The forest service Plumb will be ready to go as soon as the linseed oil dries and I sharpen it.

Thanks. Which one are you talking about?

Guessing you meant me? :D Thanks. Couldn't believe they were all just sitting around. There was another interesting one in the junk pile with the huge Plumb head but it was rusted beyond repair.
This one... I don't know if you actually took any pictures of it or whatever but this caught my eye so I figured, if you get it bead blasted it might get it in a ready state.

Ohh, sorry, I thought you said "that one is beyond repair." No, it's almost rusted all the way through the eye. I did take a pic of it though, I'll post it tonight.

Here's the one that I left on the pile. Wish I'd have gotten to it a couple years sooner. This is the better looking side of it.

The Plumb FS Cruiser is going to be sharpened and taken for a test run tomorrow or Friday. Love how the linseed oil made the handle a bit darker. This is it in between the FS Collins and the WWII Martindale Machete.

And about that machete.. I really don't think I have the skill or equipment to rehandle it now. Anyone who does handles well want a project?

mmm, axes. good stuff. sager chemical rocks. those old collins (legitmus) are also probably worth something.

oh hai, the forum is backish :D

granite: i know a guy with a slow 10 inch grinder for scythe blades ;)

biscuit - if you want to try a straight blade, drop me a line.
I have one I can send you that was resurrected in E's shop -- now it's a fixed blade, but pointy sharpened it up pretty decent.

if you want to do a cord wrap that works on a machete -- start by thickening the handle a little with paint sticks or flat pieces of leather.
for that matter, you can make a pretty comfy handle out of old belt sections glued up then shaped with a rasp or 4 in 1 file.

Thanks for the straight razor offer. I have several, plus the proper stones and strop to restore them. I've just never taken the time to really prep one for shaving.

Pics above came out a little big. I was seeing what my phone would do. Seems the original pics were too big to upload. So I emailed them to myself as "Large" attachments. I might need to go with "Medium"? I'll test it. I don't know if that will resize the pic or if it will just reduce the resolution.

Screenshots of images are smaller in size than the images themselves, at least on my phone (iPhone), so opening up an image to be fullscreen and then shooting a screencap means I can post them directly from the phone, sincie it just creates a new, slightly smaller version of the photo.

i've got 3 double bits off ebay some time ago, one of them is a saeger chemical, that's like 10+ inches edge to edge. similar for the other. wide swamp patterns :D
