Hey cOLD, did I notice a picture of your hansome mug on my facebook page today? If so, I finally put two and two together! (I'm slow) thanks for the support man!

I am on your facebook, but hardly a handsome mug, lol. Love your knives man, hoping someday soon to get one for myself.

I also have to build a heavy duty work bench, need a bandsaw and a drill press, and also gonna build a gas furnace for ht.

bandsaw and drill press are indispensable.
I bought the Atlas mini-forge from a knife materials supplier. Google it up, it was featured here somewhere too. It was easier for me to trade a few dollars for a finished device than try to beg time from my metalworking friends.

Im on the bench for a new sander too. After 2 years, like 12 knives and an unaccounted for number of stacked leather handles, wood and homemade micarta scales, my hf 1x30 died. I'm gonna take it to my mechanic friend to see if he can fix it but I'm leaning towards the craftsman 2x42. I think a 2" belt would make grinding easier too, and there seems to be several youtube vids on modding it. Feedback? I also have to build a heavy duty work bench, need a bandsaw and a drill press, and also gonna build a gas furnace for ht.

Building a gas furnace would be better suited for forging. Might be hard to monitor specific temps for precision heat treat. Remember, if your HT isn't right, you've waisted all of your time. You can skimp on a lot of things. But your smartest investment not to skimp on would be a good grinder, as far as heat treat. If you can't afford both pieces of equipment. Hire your HT done until you can.. you can't halfass that.

I was thinking of building a ceramic lined pipe with a nozzle and inlet for a pyrometer, and will be working just 1084; also considered sending out for ht but would really like to do it myself.

I agree with Todd's priorities.

If you're doing 1084, that particular steel is very easy to get right with home equipment - that's one of it's great advantages.

If you can get it red hot when you're grinding it that should take care of the heat treat, right?

Don't forget panther pee and/or virgin's blood to quench it in

now don't you go encouraging this young fella to be wasting perfectly good virgins.

stick with panther pee, it's the best. If you can't get that, might as well substitute your own. Put it in a METAL pail, not a plastic jug. *sheesh*

Will leopard pee suffice, or is this just crazy talk?

hmmm panther pee for the quench should be easy to get. Now I need to get some unicorn to make horn scales! But seriously, and this is to the knife makers here (Terrio, Todd, Battle & daizee) - I should be able to treat 1084 with that setup, right? I'm thinking a 10" pipe lined with kaowool coated with furnace cement, gas nozzle with regulator and there will be a pyro sticking the nose in. So far the ones I've made were heated up inside a refractory brick but I want to do it right.

drink a bottle tequilia. pee. instant panther piss.

coffeehas been unsatisfying recently, going back to the previous method.

School starts back this morning. My daughter is happy. Im ready for a little quiet time myself.
