I just got off the scales a bit ago. Tippin' em at 279 now.

if you're any good at all with your hands, the learning curve shouldn't be that steep.
plus - 2" wide belt is easier to keep an even surface.
of course, the HF 1x30 isn't a bad machine to learn with either -- and it's under $100.

You can run 1x42 belts on a 2x42 grinder. The reverse doesn't work.
.

Would I need to buy something to make it interchangeable? Or mod it?

Im good with my hands and a quick study, my father makes intarsia, like the picture below. He use to make and sell it a lot but now he has got way to into archery to care about it much anymore LMAO, He actually just won 1st place at Florida Sunshine State Games FITA Archery Tournament a few months back... but when I was a kid I went out to his work shop and made me a fish, same way I seen my father do for years. It looked decent to me but I thought he would be dissapointed, he was always a perfectionist, but when he seen it he thought it was great... Then i just thought my father was being "nice" to his son. but that weekend my fish sold right after it was hung up.... But it took me about 30 hours to cut and sand each piece, then I only made 45 bucks off of it. So that was the last one I made LMAO but my father sold some for hundreds. On the web they have some like the picture below that costs over 2 grand, my father made a lot of those same ones and similar and sold them for 3-500, but it could take a couple months to get them done, he had a long waiting list. he had to order different wood and everything. there is no dies or paints in this stuff.

Man im all off track.... but im not erasing all that after i typed it LMAO.... Im pretty good with my hands with wood, not bad anyway, and I can free hand sharpen well. I should be able to pick it up, and like I said I plan to sacrifice a couple knives anyway to get the feel for it.

don't sacrifice knives, sacrifice scrap wood or scrap metal.

I have an old craftsman 1x42. The tracking is lousy and the homemade platen is worse.
It's worth a few bucks to have a decent machine. I use it all the time for various things, tho.

I'd love to build a scale-model KMG for 1x42 belts. that would RULE.

Anything left? That looks good.

Yup! I'll be having leftovers for lunch for a couple days.

Nope. The idler roller on the Craftsman is slightly crowned, so 1" belts will just run right down the center.

Yea at like 3400 bucks plus shipping... Ill get a pro grinder on a retainer :)

It's not a hobbyist's machine, that's for sure. Travis walked me through a full in-depth test run with it at BLADE last spring... It's a bad motor-scooter - powerful, fast (or slow if you want it to be), rock-solid, accurate, precise, super-versatile and runs quiet. I watched him take .060" (that's nearly 1/16") off a 2" wide bar of annealed steel with the surface grinder attachment - in ONE pass. That's not something I'd really need to do, but it's pretty impressive.

'71 Commando had a 2x132" Bader with a 3HP motor and a 6" drive wheel... I have video of him turning 3/4" stainless rod into powder. *crazy*

just ordered an 8" dmt dia stone fine to replace my old japanese water stone, hope it lives up to all the hype as I've never used anything but whet stones..

great looking sheaths psyop, very nice indeed...!

You'll like the diamond stones. They're flat and they stay that way. Think of it as a small abrasive surface-plate.

Im on the bench for a new sander too. After 2 years, like 12 knives and an unaccounted for number of stacked leather handles, wood and homemade micarta scales, my hf 1x30 died. I'm gonna take it to my mechanic friend to see if he can fix it but I'm leaning towards the craftsman 2x42. I think a 2" belt would make grinding easier too, and there seems to be several youtube vids on modding it. Feedback? I also have to build a heavy duty work bench, need a bandsaw and a drill press, and also gonna build a gas furnace for ht.
