Got a BK-5 in the mail yesterday - gift from a fellow forum member. Trying to decide what kinda new scales to put on it... for some reason I'm thinking of curly maple ;)

Past couple of days, I've bought two more Fieldline packs/bags. Grabbed a little camo pack ($10) for stashing my dove decoys. And I picked up a $16 "Tactical" shooter's bag. The latter has two padded compartments with magazine slots, a removable pouch, two outer zipped compartments, molle attachments on one side, and a shoulder strap. Pretty impressive.

Nice blades, Rob! I've always liked your curly scales.

I'm thinking about a grinder upgrade again... Just discovered the old Honda CB350 isn't inspected this year, which makes it hard to sell today at rice-o-rama... dammit, that thing probably represents a KMG. Also considering a Coote with all the trimmings as a somewhat less expensive alternative.

Thanks Daizee,

although I have a kmg I think they're a little over hyped, I was very surprised to find out what a few makers use and the absolutely beautiful fixed and folder knives they put out with a kalamazoo, or even the craftsman... I'm seriously considering a craftsman down the road with a fixed jig just for scandis... my first couple knife shaped objects were on my hf 1x30... so yeah virtually anything will work...

if I could afford it I'd use an ancient technique with a stone and pedal power :)

That's not a bad idea at all... they're cheap, they don't take up much space and they last pretty well. I've ground a heckuva lotta blades on my lowly Craftsman (I did convert it to run 72" belts, of course). They run fast but I think that helped me develop my "touch". The platen is awful but it's easy to put a ceramic face on it. The disc sander isn't super-precise, but it does work. I use it all the time to put the basic shape/bevel on the fronts of my scales.

I'm gonna run mine till it pukes and dies or until I can afford a TW-90 with surface grinding attachment, whichever comes first.

After our conversation I was about to pull the trigger on a craftsman last night but I couldnt for the life of me figure out why the kalamazoo cost more if it seems like it does less, and why I keep reading of the kalamazoo being used by knife-makers and professional sharpeners yadda yadda yadda, so I want to make sure im getting the best tool for the job, so i started a thread on the subject to find out whats better and WHY.

You guys seem to have quite a bit of knowledge on the subject so it would be great if you join in, if you want of course.

the kalamazoo has a better motor.
the craftsman runs faster, so you need a light touch.
2x42 belts are not the easiest to find, either - 1x30 and 1x42 are much more commonly available.

Thanks for that info Vik!!!

Replacement belts are one of my main concerns, I dont personally know much about the different tools, but I want to make sure i can get replacement belts for what ever I get easily and affordable.

Any other Pepsi lover out there that has not tried the throwback should do so immediately!!!

It is DELICIOUS! Me and the wife set up our own blind taste test for each other, She thought I would be partial to the regular Pepsi so she made sure i didnt know which was in the glasses.... and we both picked the throwback 3 out of 3 times!!!

Damn, you're really serious about your Pepsi. :D

That TW-90 is the stuff dreams are made of.

LMAO I have only shared a small percentage of my Pepsi obsession. You have NO idea LMAO

How many other people you know that has got a thank you card from Pepsi? I only had to invest enough to buy a small house first LMAO

I have a craftsman and buy my belts from tru-grit.

Im looking at the belts now for each. 1x42 seems to have more options and easier to get for sure.

But another thing Im thinking is since i dont have any experience using grinders on knives, the faster motor might not be a good idea to start out with, What do you think??? I mean I have some knives I will be sacrificing to learn anyway but Id hate to mess up one of my more expensive blades because Im a newbie.

....... I should have known Id get better Info here than the appropriate subforum LMAO... But I tried :)

You can run 1x42 belts on a 2x42 grinder. The reverse doesn't work.

In other news, it's little wonder that I weigh 250#... ;)
