Its almost 4am...I been sitting here since 9pm working on my knife design. I want to give a huge thank you to mac_health who was kind enough to cut the design out of wood for me. It made it so much easier to see how it would feel in hand. This guy made several, a couple he even made the exact thickness i want the knife which really showed me some things that i needed to change for better comfort. then he also made 1 with scales glued on so i could shape them, and one set of scales on the side. I mean this right here helped SO SO much. If i would of just had the knife made from what I had on paper it would not have been ideal. Thanks again Tim.

After hours of carving with a knife and using a file, after messing one up ( so thankful you sent extras) I have got it where i think is just a perfect knife for me anyways. Now all i need to do is figure out how i want the holes in the handle for the screws/pins or whatever ends up being used and it will be ready to come to life :D

I know the feeling, it took me ages to get my first knife design where I wanted it and that was just on paper. After that it becomes a lot easier...Dunno why. What kinda knife is it if you don't mind me asking?

Drop point 3/16" thick 10" OAL Blade just over 5", blade is 1.5" wide at widest point

Really its nothing fancy or crazy, i took everything i liked with all my favorite knives and combined them in my favorite size of knife.

I liked it on paper, but now after most the night i think its finally perfect for me.

Thanks

The tasting is about 1/8th cup cayenne pepper and 2tbl spoons minced garlic in a "4.5x1" Burger (conservatively)

Its giant beefy "hot mess" lol.

I need to figure out to make em bigger/thicker..

That's what she said right?

You need some sort of ring to act as a boundary while you form the patties. They make pie tins with removable walls that might work depending on how big you are wanting to go, or you could get a ring of pvc cut off in the diameter you want for your burger. Then you need something that fits exactly to press the patty into shape. So if the interior of the ring is six inches in diameter, you need a piece of something flat that will fit inside six inches to use as a press. Lay on top of wax paper, load your hamburger meat fixings inside the ring, then squash them down into shape. I've been able to get patties up to around six inches in width and maybe an inch and a quarter thick like that. Keep it cold during prep though, the warmer the patty gets the more it is inclined to fall apart. To prevent shrinkage, shape the patty such that the middle is thinner than the outside edge. The shape to the farthest right is close to what you want to have:

A burger patty will cook from the outside in. Shaping the burger to compensate for this will reduce the loss of diameter during cooking. What mixture are you using for your burger patties? That can play into it too. My best results have come from a mixture of two parts ground round with two parts ground sirloin with one part sausage.

And no, I don't shave above my ankles. After years of wearing work boots and rubbing that leg hair off, it just stopped growing in that spot.

Same thing happened to me. Don't bother me none, I never wear shorts in public anyway.

And if you couldn't drop it fast enough, so you have to follow a blood trail, you probably shouldn't be hunting anyways, because you seriously fubbed your shot.

Sorry to contradict you, but in defense of my many friends and clients who hunt, that's just plain ignorant. There are tons of documented stories and videos of game animals being shot clean through the heart and taking off for a hundred yards or more through thick cover. It ain't like in the video games ;)

Hey, I got a question: If a person gets all camo'd up/tact'd out to go out into the woods for a camping excursion, does that really mean he's being "bushcraftical?"

I don't know, but that has a cool ring to it :)

The people who sell those scales said it is buckeye burl. I wanted some for my Native5 but they cost as much as the knife. I really like them but over 130 bucks is STEEP. But I been thinking of having someone else here in the US make some scales for a fixed blade out of that stuff. Its gorgeous wood.

It's STEEP because figured/burl wood like that is rare, fragile, there's a really low yield when you do find a chunk, it has to be professionally stabilized, and it's kind of a pain to work with. It tends to be a bit chippy when you cut and drill it. Even though my suppliers pick out the best stuff they can, about every 4th set I make ends up trashed because I find a big hole or inclusion in it. That will make you say very bad words when you're working with a $40-100 chunk of wood ;)

Sure looks pretty when it's done though. This one is curly spalted maple...

California Buckeye burl. I have some for my 9 mod, if I ever get to it:

Yea i understand that to a degree, i mean I could understand them costing 80ish at most for this size just due to difficulty getting it or working with it. But I can find the same wood in that size for under 20 bucks so i just dont feel comfortable paying so much for so little. Under 100 could get you enough of this wood for a guitar. over 130 for a piece so small doesnt seem worth it IMO of course, i know others feel differently about it.

James that looks beautiful man

Warrior those are sweet too bud!!

No problem. I just thought about what I'd like if I were carving out a knife design. I sent extras because I figured you might make several attempts to come up with a handle you like.

Cuscadi makes some really fine scales, I have wanted to get another Ritter grip and some Cuscadi scales for years (or even some Wilkin's), but I am scared to carry a $250 knife in my pocket every day after I lost my old Ritter minigrip years ago. I have a FRN Native that I got for around $35 at Walmart (to replace my lost Ritter knife) and I couldn't be happier with it. I would really like to try out a Native5 too, but I am afraid the things I love most about the Native wouldn't be the same, mainly it is small, light, and cheap yet dependable.

JT that is a beautiful handle! Curly Maple is absolutely beautiful and your work looks awesome. It is like a storm coming over the horizon, like boiling clouds..

Warrior, I am still jealous of those scales, I remember when you got them... if you ever decide to part with them...lol.

If you're finding top-quality, professionally-stabilized wood like that for under $20, or enough to build a guitar for under $100, I want need to know the supplier. Seriously, shoot me an email. Unless you're finding it on the 'bay, in which case don't bother.

Sometimes you really do get what you pay for, and "sounds too good to be true" nearly always is ... ;)

The knives I get from Todd have Curly maple handles. They are fairly gorgeous. Nothing like the burl up there but impeccable nonetheless.

Yea its on the bay for the guitars but i just googled buckeye burl knife blanks, and boards and found quite a few places with 20 dollar pieces bigger than what would be required for that folder. Im sure some of those ebay ones wouldnt be great, I dont even have an ebay account LOL i dont shop there, but when i was searching the wood thats where i seen a bunch.
