Snark it, Snark it Good

I just got home from sitting for 2 and a half hours of propaganda... er... Sorry the new Captain America. It was really NOT good. If I'd had to pay for it I'd of been pissed. Oh wait... I did. At least I knew enough to drink half a bottle of vodka before going. It made it so at least I sat through the whole thing. Now though I'm laying in bed watching Lion King.

LOL. I've not seen the the new Captain America movie. What did you not like about it?

Have you guys seen these new hawks from GB?

Never had a problem - touch wood.

Gus, I've been around both of those dogs, I don't know about the other one but I would venture to say all that Oz would do would lick a guy to death. :D

In my experience, the huge benefit of dogs is that they deter incidents. A criminal has no way of knowing how a dog will react, other than most of them react loudly. That, in it self, seems to discourage your average casual criminal, and they go looking for a quieter area for their shenanigans.

The other thing is that, in my experience at least, dogs are very sensitive to the owners' emotions. If the owners are friendly towards you, so are the dogs. If the owner is nervous or scared, then the dogs will be also. Two of our dogs will either lick a visitor to death or try to crawl in their lap from some ear scratching, including the 70+ pound boxer/pit mix. The German Shepherd mix is pretty relaxed most of the time (kinda too cool for school attitude), and is the only one we have inside when customers come over to pick up guns. There is no doubt he is the alpha male and right behind me and my wife in the "pack leadership." He usually finds a spot where he can observe from a short distance when strangers are in the house, so I have no doubt that the shepherd instinct would kick in if the "pack" were threatened.

The British with a hammer poll would make me happy, but HB forge, does some very similar stuff, for a much more reasonable tag, aand they are pretty well reviewed in the axe and hawk forum here. Check em out Gus.

I assume you've seen the original. Is it as good?

Considerably better, actually. The acting is stronger, the direction MUCH better, it's actually got a plot, transitions are well done and artistic, and the action is incredible. Gory in the extreme, but great. I honestly don't know how is not NC-17 at least for violence, and even that barely scratches the surface. I guess it's worse to see boobs than the most intense and gory violence.

I think that boils down to a mentality and training issue. Maybe a women's hand-to-hand self defense class would be a good start. It would give her some useful knowledge in it's own right and help cultivate the proper mindset that she could possibly build on later.

Here's a really good video on home defense planning by Massad Ayoob who's a pretty big name who is highly respected and considered to be an expert on the subject of personal defense.

Massad Ayoob, Clint Smith, and Rob Pincus are all considered to be authorities on the subject and have videos on youtube and DVD's for sale that contain a wealth on knowledge and good advice.

That was an excellent video Hoss. I've got quite a few of the Rob Pincus videos that he puts out in conjunction with the NRA, and he's got good stuff as well..

I'd also add Jeff Cooper to that list.

One of this thoughts most relevant to the discussion:

"Safety is something that happens between your ears, not something you hold in your hands."

Also, Clint Smith:

"The best example of good training is to never get in a fight."

I believe this is a direct lift from Sun Tzu:

"For to win one hundred victories in one hundred battles is not the acme of skill. To subdue the enemy without fighting is the acme of skill."

That's pretty much goes along with what I've seen too. I used to work in a quick-lube and I was usually the guy that had to get into people's cars to run them. A lady pulled in once with a dog, I think it was an Australian shepard maybe but it was years ago. Anyway she said I had to be introduced to the dog so we went over and I was introduced so-to-speak and the dog was very friendly to me even after the owner stepped away. The boss man didn't catch the part about the introduction but saw the dog being very sweet towards me and though she was gently and started to reach in the car to pet her. I told him that wasn't a good idea and he kinda scoffed as he was getting closer. Didn't even get his hand in the car before the dog started growling and I have no doubt the she would have turned that hand into a chew toy if he'd kept going. She sure liked me though.

I've seen several other dogs that were protective of houses and cars if the owners weren't around but very friendly if they were.

Thanks for the heads-up Thorny. The GBs are nice but the price is a bit prohibitive.
