Uncle Fester?

It's like listening to two twelve year old boys talking about giving birth.

Off to the Quote Thread with you

Being a Raider fan, I hate to cheer for the Donks, but I really don't like Pete Carroll and the Seahawks, and Peyton went to my wife's alma mater, soooo... yeah I guess so. Go Donkeys. Yay.

I noticed Ryan Weaks has his own sub forum now. I've been a fan of his work for a while so that will be neat to follow. He came by my table at Blade but I wasn't able to chat with him very much, but he sure seems like a stand up guy, I'll make it a point to talk with him more this year.

I been up all night messing with designs. See the steel i got is only 3" wide and I found out real quick just because i keep the knife under 3" wide it might not fit due to the angles and curves im using on some designs.

SO i been drawing them out full size to make sure they fit on the steel, and drawing this one out i just drew a blank... I cant figure out how to connect the blade to the handle on the bottom. This knife wont need any finger choil, that blade is 15.5" from handle to tip and if i chose this design the knife will only be used for chopping and delimbing, no small delicate work, but i do want a sort of sharpening choil or some type of gap for ease of sharpening.

I know this isnt pretty, just a quick sketch at full size to make sure it would fit on the steel with the curves and angles, but im not sure how to do the bottom by the handle? Any suggestions?

Mornin', 'Heads.

I'm not. Well, I might, but it isn't in the books. I have no vested interest in either of the teams, I have no interest in the half time abomination, and the last few years the commercials have been disappointing to say the least. SO, not going to be watching.

Im not watching it. Barely ever do unless im at a super bowl party and i have not went to a super bowl party in YEARS. Never been much into WATCHING sports. When i was younger I played some football in high school as a wide receiver, and i played basketball with friends most every weekend.... but sitting and watching others play was never much fun or very interesting to me.

I don't have any plans to watch it. I'm going fishing mid-afternoon until sometime after dark. After that I might catch part of the game if nothing else is on.

Sounds like I'm in good company. I've never been a sports fan. Runs in the family. :D

You mean like this?

I don't really see a need for a sharpening notch. Who cares if it's not razor sharp all the way back to the plunge, or if you scratch the plunge sharpening it? You're not going to be peeling apples with that bad boy.

I have serious reservations about the handle design; it looks remarkably uncomfortable. I wouldn't want something that tight on a knife that large (or any knife, really). I'd want a little more room for my hand to flex and "lay back" in more of a sabre grip. Not crazy about the blade-to-handle angle, either... it's clear that you're modeling it after your Keffeler but you have to remember, a 10" and a 15.5" blade are two completely different animals. That might just be me, though. Definitely make a few wooden or even cardboard models before you commit to cutting up a giant piece of steel like that.

Sorry to be a jerk, but you asked (kinda) :p

Have we heard anything from tradewater post-sake? I fear there might have been a scene of rampant carnage with ample blood splatter.

No need to be sorry at all, this is what i want so i know whats what :) I appreciate it bud!!

What do you mean by the handle is too tight? How should i change it?

You can see im having a real hard time trying to figure out a knife with a 15" blade. I understand why you dont see it often, but i want something MASSIVE, even if its not the best chopper in my collection... hell i doubt ill ever have a better chopper than the keffeler.... but that doesnt mean i dont want any more choppers HAHA

And yes it was of course kind of modeled after the Keffeler and other competition choppers, Do you think a knife with a blade 15" should be more straight handle to blade like the bk9?

aaaaaand that's one reason people forge instead of stock-remove. (of course the forgers all end up grinding too. ;))

beat me to it.
Besides, that's one less possible stress riser on a high-stress blade.

wasn't his Skinner Sight question post-sake? Or is that why you're worried?

maybe we're related. I'd rather be doing than watching other people do.
And watching a bunch of guys in tights run around a field chasing their balls is rather *yawn* for me.
I DO appreciate good SPORT, but don't follow 'sports'.

Being a stock-removal guy, I've yet to get a commission for a KSO that large. Folks love the idea of something like that in Elmax or CPM-3V, but when they see my quote on steel cost alone, never mind belts and labor, I usually never hear from 'em again :D CrimsonFalcon would be the guy to ask about a project like that.

Wrapped around the hand front and back. Don't do that. It allows only one grip, which is pretty much a straight wrist... which is terrible for slashing or chopping.

Do you think a knife with a blade 15" should be more straight handle to blade like the bk9?
Maybe halfway in between. Some "drop" is good on almost any knife, but too much gets weird and hard to control.

That's kind of beyond the class of being a knife or even a machete. Ask around in the sword forum.

straight/locked wrist, bottom middle in this drawing... good for whittling and controlled cuts.
loose wrist/sabre grip, top left... much better for slashing and chopping.

Moose has a great video around here somewhere showing some various grips for different tasks.

So when winching a dead horse out of a corral, the legs will not pull off as I had feared. It was a smooth operation, not for the horse of course, the M-18 got no joy.
