I dunno where Hillsboro Oregon is, however let me know how you like it? If you get it let me know how it compares to say the BK-11 and the Esee IzulaII...

It's on the west side of Portland. I live on the east side. I will only be able to compare it to the 14 and/or the 11. I have no ESEE's...........yet.

Why do people hate on the two holes cut into the handle? Seriously it wouldn't really compromise it in any way.

Well... it shouldn't matter in anything resembling normal use, and it's worthwhile for balance. But if a person is really going to beat the snot out of a knife, there's no denying that more steel is more stronger. My personal opinion as a maker is that Becker tangs are very well designed, and certainly strong enough for any sane person... and a lot of not-so-sane persons. When someone breaks one, I have to take a long, hard look at the user and what they were doing with it.

I baton knives all the time and I'm pretty convinced that nearly any knife can handle it... when done right. The problem is, there are a lot of ways to baton wrong. The most common (and most dangerous) being...

Are you thinking like he got the blade stuck and was trying to get it out so pounded on the handle?

More like got it stuck and just kept trying to pound it through.

yeah - he had to have been pounding on the back half of the handle to get that kind of separation.

That's what I'm thinking, too. Burying the blade and hammering behind the ricasso/guard puts a tremendous amount of stress on a knife... none of the energy is being transferred to the workpiece, it's all concentrated right there on the blade/tang junction. You're almost guaranteed to break something if you do that long enough. The physics involved are actually pretty simple.

That can be avoided by simply never trying to baton anything as wide as (or wider than ) your blade's length. It's just plain dumb to try to split a 6" log right down the middle with a 6" knife... take a few pieces off the "sides" first and get it down to a manageable size.

When splitting tough wood it's a good idea to carve yourself a wedge before even beginning. That way if your blade does get bound up, you can just tap the wedge in behind it and relieve the stress.

Have we talked about 52100 lately :D

Thats 5-2-1-0-0

I just want to make sure you dont miss seeing those digits together like that :D

Oh yeah, I can play the 52100 game...

I actually think this is a pretty decent attempt at a saber grind if I may say so myself.

Lookin good :) 52100 is a real pleasure to work on... and cut with.

Snark.

I can't think of many knives harder to break than a BK2. Good job?

Nice grinds, Cam. Looks nice and clean.

I'm thinking quick 4-mile hike before baseball practice at noon.

I've been trying to get used to carrying (wearing?) a necker...and while I love my 11, I really love the DPX HEST I picked up a couple months ago...comfortable handle, reasonably light...still having a hard time with anything around my neck, though. At least it's made by Rowen, so I feel like it's *almost* in the Becker family ;):

BK2's don't break like that. Trust me, I tried. Even used a vise and a 3' cheater bar. Bent, but no break.

There is something wrong with that one, bet on it. Inclusion, flaw in the steel or a fluke on the heat treat.

I'll bet money it will be replaced, examined and tossed into the grind'o'matic.

Apparently I'm so eager to get my stitches out that I showed up at the dentist an hor early. Who DOES that? So walking around the neighborhood, I discovered: the chinese bakery is as aawesome inside as their products are outside. Two more liquor stores that don't carry the butternuts stout. A pound off loclly roasted espresso whole bean coffee (first evaluation). Gun&dive closed, but e didn't like them. An awesome little detached building for rent PERFECT for a knife shop (but impractical for me). And 10 more minutes to kill...
