Its something i have never mentioned before.... But im hesitant to post about it because someone might steal my idea and get all the fame......

Ok, OK, OK, you talked me into it....... Just dont tell anyone else...

Its a remote controlled knife. Does the work for you and you control it sitting by the campfire. I have a couple geniuses on call helping me with all the details.

Shhhh... Its a secret :D

Not only did I just now beat you to the punch, but I did one better. I created a fully autonomous robot knife that cuts and splits the wood for you without any input at all. Even a drunk guy in his basement could operate it with complete safety.

Next I'm going to create one with A.I. that will eventually attempt to wipe out humanity, but we won't realize it until it's too late. Then we'll have to send some guy back in time to protect and impregnate the mother of the man who will lead the resistance to victory. But keep it under your hat.

Hope you have a good lawyer. Just got off the phone with mine and we're going to take this one to trial :D

So, spent the last two days molding 1969 Mustang tail lights into custom made fenders on 2006 Peterbilt....... thats right. Lol. No visible mounting holes or bolts, all integral. A real pain in the ass but turned out awesome. So, that means I think I can take off Thursday and Friday for knife work.

Oh, and by the way, doc changed my meds. Felt like a new man today. No sleep driving :D

Todd - glad to hear that you are feeling better and no more sleep zombie stuff.
WW - Sorry to see you selling that awesome beast but if you end up getting something that helps you move in the right direction then you will be happier I think.
710 - you can try soaking your hands in ice water for a few minutes then alternate to warm water with Epsom salt. That's what we used after picking cucumbers and okra all day.

hmmm...
apparently Mother Nature's timing is a bit off -- it rained buckets the night I was trying to pack the truck to head to the gathering and this is the second day of rain since I got back.

Thanks brother and i agree completely. :)

I disagree. And this is just my two cents. Take it for what its worth. If you don't want to sell your knife WW, DON'T... I get your bit by the bug but you have yet to complete your first knife but have 10 times more tools than I had for the fist 40 knives I made. I dont care how much money you spend out of the box. If your skills don't develop your spending more money on equipment at this point is not necessary. You got more than enough to START learning processes and technique.

I'm looking forward to seeing more of this one. That's pretty slick.

VERY good point, Todd. There are even skills that don't require steel...like design. And that comes from drawing, drawing, drawing. Cheap. I'm sure there are other things, but I like to draw a lot first....and I have limited experience with all the other stuff ;).

I gotta run out there tomorrow and use my lathe. If I remember, I'll take some pics of it outside of the shop so you can see it from a different point of view. Whats cool also, is I just do fab work, they where wiring them up when I left, they are wiring them to work like the new Mustang lights. So, the lights will blink starting from the inside out in the direction of the turn. Pretty cool. Probably the only Peterbilt out there with them. All hand made.

You made 40 knives without a grinder?

I have 8 feet of steel on the way solely for the purpose of practicing technique and learning the process. But i dont have money for new belts. I dont have ANY sharpening stones or ways to put final edges on ANY knife i finish, and i will not be using a 2x42 as fast as it is to put a final edge on anything. Dont wanna ruin the HT. Or screw up all my grinds after i spent hours filing it out and paying for HT. Money i dont have. And dont wanna use files to put final edges and convex these edges with sandpaper ETC. Im not a huge fan of convexed edges.

I have finished my first knife as far as i can before HT. Its just waiting to go to heat treat. My 2nd knife is about done now as well. And will be ready for HT in the next day or 2 max. I dont have money for HT.

I have something else i want to do and it would be impossible to do it with the stuff i own. Im guessing there is a lot of knife makers that couldnt pull this off with the stuff they own and it be functional. Not saying you couldnt, but you have access to far better, and far more tools than a lot of knife makers. And your skill level is also at a way higher level these days. I want this done before Xmas. This would be impossible unless i sell something. I have a few family friends willing to pay for this idea already for xmas presents if i can get it done. and that would give me more money to keep progressing.

I have a couple knives i use every chance i get and would never sell them. This one is the best looking knife i own but due to its size its not something i use often, but it could help me out much more than a knife hanging on my wall, which is what the giedymin does 99.9% of the time.

I get what your saying but i cant keep going the direction i want without money. I cant test the 2 knives i made for function without money for HT, i cant sharpen what i make without money. And paying my land off to move takes precedence over spending money on making knives. I love making knives so far, but moving my family somewhere there is not a couple murders every week within a few miles, somewhere my kids can play outside, somewhere my son and daughter is not the only light skinned people in their school and hear it everyday is much more important. So i can just stop once i grind out my steel and wait a year to move before i can HT and sharpen them.... Or i can sell something to continue to learn and improve. I had to sell my Bow and finance the stuff i got in order to even get this far, i knew id have to sell something else to keep going if i enjoyed the hobby. I do, very much. So thats where im at now.

O.k. slow down WW. Nothing to get excited about. I understand the whole bettering the family thing but that has nothing to do with this conversation. You made it sound in the post that you were selling the knife to fund "something" that had to do with making knives. And since I offered to heat treat your first effort knives FOR FREE, I sure as hell dont know why you need to sell the knife for ht.
Furthermore, you ask like its unheard of. "You made 40 knives before you had a grinder" YOU BET YOUR ASS I DID. Thats because (much like you) I loved it and was fascinated by it. I have tools and skill beyond most. MAYBE. But I sure as hell didnt get ANY of those overnight. I worked hard, saved my money and worked with what I had. As my skill progressed, I bought tools. I just turned 40 years old. Most people between your age and mine buy motorcycles, cool cars, swimming pools for there families, I bought lathes, mills, grinders, welders. My whole family has lived and breathed this shit with me by my side for the last 16 years. 16 YEARS. Not 16 weeks.

Just for the record. A FINISHED knife means just that. A "finished" knife up to heat treat, is still just a piece of metal.

Aaaand the grinder I use to put the final edge on all of my knives is the old 1in. version of the grinder you got. It was the very first grinder I ever got back in 1999. It runs just as fast. Practice practice practice. My point really to all of this. But do what you want. Just be a shame to see you burn out so soon.

WW -- check the exchange in the makers gear & supplies section Talfuchre has a pile of O1 steel for cheap.
great stuff for practicing grinds and making gifts. (it's all 3/32 & 1/8" thick stock, so not chopper material, but awesome for kitchen, hunting, and GP camp knives.)

Never forget the value of learning to file and draw-file with accuracy... with and without jigs/guides. It's a skill that comes in handy anyway, plus it builds character. :p
