Snarking in a Becker Wonderland

not adding to the conversation. missed every point.

Nope, I didn't miss any points at all. I've pulled knives brand new out of the box before and started modding them too. It's all just personal preference, really. Some don't hold the same degree of nostalgia as others! Ethan took an iconic design and made it his and others are making it theirs! No difference at all really. :)

I get the point :) Out of the box the knives do work just find as is  we all know that ;) for someone to take a brand new one and change it is WTH:p but I think that is a big part of what makes Beckers Even Greater is if you want you can turn them into what or how you want them. Personally Beckers are my favorite Knives for that reason. They are fine out of the box and the sky is the limit of how you want them to be ;) I change everything I own to my liking if I like it :D everything needs tweaking one way or another.

perhaps you are [deliberately] missing my point (banning! :>)

there's "i tried it for a few weeks" and there's "i got that suckah outtah the box, and immediately stripped, convexed, and ...."

which tells me, you don't know the character of the original knife at all.

in other words, you don't know what you are missing or what you frakked with.

naturally, you're happy with the final result. no question.

however, you are no longer "one" with the idea.

shrug.
Are you referring to just the Kephart? I don't think I've seen anyone mod 1 yet. :D

I modded my 62. But only after field dressing and cleaning at least 6 deer. My hands are different than Horaces lol I knew what I wanted and did it. Just a touch for my index finger. Field dressing deer in single digit temps learnt me a thing or 3

Had a car wreck this past Sunday. My wife and stepson got banged up pretty good from the side air bags. Taking care of all the medical, vehicle repair, and rental car is a daunting task. Everybody is doing good. Just trying to get back on track.

Yikes. Glad to hear everyone’s ok. Heal up quick brother.

Damn. I’m really glad everyone walked away and I’m hoping for a speedy recovery.

maintenance is a thing

immediately stripping a knife, removing the thumb ramp, reprofiling the grind, rounding the point, adding a clip, adding a choil, within hours of receiving it, never having sample how it works...

i might be controversial, but i do tend to let the knife speak to me as purchased for a while before making decisions that cannot be undone.

sure, if you have a vision, and bought the thing to achieve that, great, but it doesn't "honor" the intent, if that's what you had in mind. kind of why i'm irritated at some folks producing "the canadian" or "the kephart" or "the nessnuk", and they completely missed the point except making a buck. cough. buck.

but yeah, i know, your knife, your tweaks. super duper :D

i still don't quite get it though.

I certainly understand your points and I even agree to a certain extent. Buying a knife and then immediately putting it to a grinder makes me a bit uneasy.

I can usually tell within a few short moments if a knife is for me or not. Sometimes, I feel I can tweak things, other times, I am more apt to look elsewhere. I recently got in an LT Wright Bushbaby. The feel in hand was terrible and could benefit from some handle reshaping. Since the knife is mine and reasonably cheap, I am comfortable doing the work.

Becker knives are an incredible value so I can see why 'heads are inclined to do mods. But in the spirit of your objections, I would hope that some folks would put in some time with the knife before making that call. Particularly in the case of the 62.

Personally, I despise coated/painted blades. I know why they coat the blades in production and so I understand the spirit of it but I know, with no small amount of certainty, that if I like a blade that happens to be coated, that paint is coming off.

Ultimately, a knife user is going to make a knife his/hers. And yes, with respect to the initial design/designer, I would hope that folks would give a knife it's dues before grinding it up. And I think, for the most part, we tend to do so.

Glad to hear everyone is well, Tanker. I hope you are able to get things sorted quickly and that your family recovers well.

Also, I would add that exchanging the factory hardware for stainless is a rather sensible mod (if that even qualifies as such). The factory coats the blades to deter rust and save costs on finishing processes, it is kind of interesting that in that particular vein, they still use nuts and bolts that rust if you look at them sideways.

Granted, stainless is more expensive, so I get it from a production standpoint.

If it makes folks feel better, I have done nothing with my 62, leaving it intact until I have the chance for some serious woods time. Aside from throwing it on my belt whilst doing household chores and dicing up many a potato, it hasn't seen any bushcraft use.

Yet...

Charged up the power bank I got for Christmas, to see how it works. Takes 10-12 hours to fully charge via USB on my home computer. Plugged my phone into it, which had a 48% charge left. My phone didn't work for the quick charge, as some devices aren't compatible, but still charged it full in 2 hours. Would have charged faster if I would have remembered to put the phone in airplane mode. Still had all 4 bars left on the power bank. Should get 5 or 6 full charges on my phone with a fully charged power bank. Able to charge 2 devices at a time.

I also tried my 15W Anker, and 21W Nekteck portable solar panels to make sure they worked. Both would charge my phone, by placing the panel in the window on a cloudy day, so should work very well in full sun. Both will charge 2 devices at the same time.

Wanted them camping/hiking, but mainly to charge stuff up at the cabin.

well, i guess i should count the number of things santa (myself) got me this year as "whoa", but it had to be done.

pretty chuffed. perhaps it's the tipping point i need :D

today was the final straw though.

i now have a mig welder. everything looks like a mod when you can weld

anyone seen those 10mm socket? never mind, i welded them to stuff.

the other item... will be a slow reveal. even after i receive it in a few weeks. "oh my". either dumb, or wondrous.

Oh yea, squirt welding! :D

Along the lines of new gear, I found my boots would not dry out after one day in the rain. All night in an open oven door did much, but I still get clammy feet days later. So Santa is sending me my first boot dryer.
