So, how many pushups can you do?

No. After age 30 about 1 - 1.5% of muscle is lost every year without activity.

Of course you can offset that by lifting weights. Those "strongest men in their 30s" have offset that.

uhm, in this case i thought it was understood that we were talking specifically about people who were trying to get stronger...not people who are comfortable with atrophy.

Just throwing out an FYI, which may motivate people of a given age.

60 in 60 have been able to since Unlce Sam was giving me half rations for being a fat ass at 190 now I am 270 and still a fat ass, but one in decent condition. ; )

This thread inspired me to give it a shot. i managed 28 before my 2 yr. old son hopped on for a ride. i managed 2 more with the passenger for a total of 30. That felt great! i'm thinkin i need to get back in shape!

Wow Cobra! you are in great shape! you should sell the mustang and just sprint everywhere!

25 and it liked to kill me. Last 3 were all over the place, but I got 'em. The guy that works behind me thought I had lost my mind. LOL.

Moose

Why did you ask NOW??

Now, 15 years ago at War College, I could do just fine. Gave our Ranger a run for the money.

Now? Let's just say Moose and I shared a very ... similar ... experience.

I hope to be breathing freely again by April.:o

i can bust out 50 in a set . after about 250 i my rotator cuff sets off the klaxon horns and starts telling me to stop ! all those years of being a raft guide did me in but good

Well, with eight shots of "Classic 12" eighty proof in my gut, a Zippo and a Buck knife in my pocket, and a S&W 642 in my wasitband, I just did 30. But I can do some awesome freehand knife sharpening!
What the heck does any of this have to do with knives, though?

Eh. 25 on a good day. If I'm really feeling it, 30. Normally 20-23.
Now don't get all critical of me yet. I just recently got into getting off my skinny, muscle-less ass and exercising on a daily basis. I started out right around 5 pushups was maxing me out. Now i can do four or five times that.
I claim credit.
Will update wig pro'er numbers at a late date.
And I know I invented words here.
I no lingusticist
Leave me alone.

hey its a good thing, you worked your way up and now just keep at it!

100 consecutive every morning. The first two things to hit the floor each morning when climbing out of bed are my hands. I'm 44

I can't do em: had a torn muscle issue in my right leg years ago and there's a buttload of scar tissue in there. I can hike up a mountain, but any direct suspension on my hamstrings = fire and a limp for a few weeks. Sucks, really.

I used to do an average of 500 pushups a night, usually 10 sets of 50, spaced out over a 10 hour shift. I could do 100 in a row, but it was difficult to the point of muscle failure and exhaustion. Chest and arms got ripped, but my shoulders and neck were a mass of knots and my elbows and shoulders ached.

Nowadays I'm a lot less hardcore. Frankly, I hate exercising but I know I have to do it. Now I usually only do 210 pushups in sets of 30.

Do 3 sets of 40 twice a day. Can go about 50 max at one time. I'm 260 lbs and 6'-4" and have worked up from nothing. I don't feel right if I miss a day so it's one of my daily milestones and working up to go 100 max reps.
